- In a large bowl, beat butter until creamy. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar, cocoa and vanilla until smooth, about 3 minutes. Add enough milk until frosting reaches spreading consistency. Beat until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.

This is by far the most chocolately, rich, and simple buttercream frosting I have ever tasted in my life! Don't worry about the espresso for those non-coffee people out there, you can't even tell it's the secret ingredient!

Steps:
- melt chocolate chips at 20 second intervals in your microwave, stirring each time until JUST melted.
- cream together butter and melted chocolate until smooth.
- add in the espresso and vanilla
- gradually beat in the confectioner's sugar and continue beating until frosting is smooth and has lightened in color.
- enjoy on your favorite cake, cupcakes, or whatever you choose. If you love chocolate, you will not be dissapointed!

- Combine the butter and cocoa powder in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (or in a large bowl if using a handheld electric mixer). Mix on low speed until combined. Add the vanilla and salt. Continue to mix on low speed, adding the sugar a cup at a time and alternating with additions of the milk. Increase the speed to medium-high and mix until smooth. Use immediately, or refrigerate in an airtight container up to 3 days. Allow to come to room temperature and mix on medium-high until smooth.

- In a small saucepan, bring the cream to a simmer. Remove from heat and add the chopped chocolate. Let stand for a few minutes before stirring until smooth. Set aside and cool to approximately 75°F or until thickened but still pourable.

- In a blender or food processor, pulse the sugar until powdery. Transfer the sugar to a medium heatproof bowl and whisk in the egg whites and salt. Set the bowl over a saucepan of simmering water and whisk gently until the sugar is completely dissolved, 5 minutes.
- Transfer the warm egg-white mixture to the bowl of a standing electric mixer fitted with the whisk. Add the vanilla and beat at medium-high speed until stiff and glossy, about 8 minutes. Beat in the butter a few pieces at a time, making sure it is fully incorporated before adding more. The buttercream should be light and fluffy; if it appears runny at any time, transfer the bowl to the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes, then return it to the mixer and continue.
- Beat in the melted chocolate until fully incorporated, scraping down the side and bottom of the bowl. Remove the bowl from the mixer and beat with a wooden spoon to remove any air bubbles.
