Best Baked French Fries image

The healthiest way to make fries is to bake them. It saves money and you can't beat the taste. I have been playing around with different ways to bake fries for some time now, and I feel this is the best recipe thus far. Baking time may vary depending on how thick you cut the fries. Enjoy!

cooking spray
6 Yukon Gold potatoes, cut into thick fries
1 tablespoon white sugar
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder, or more to taste
1 teaspoon salt, or more to taste
1 teaspoon ground black pepper, or more to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil; spray with cooking spray.
  • Place sliced potatoes in a colander; sprinkle sugar over potatoes. Set aside until liquid is released from potatoes, 20 to 30 minutes. Drain liquid and dry potatoes well.
  • Mix potato slices, olive oil, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper in a resealable bag until evenly coated. Spread coated potato slices in a single layer, leaving space around each potato, on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes; flip fries and continue baking until crisp and browned, about 20 more minutes.

1 large baking potato
1 tablespoon olive oil
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon chili powder
½ teaspoon onion powder

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
  • Cut potato into thick wedges. Mix olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, chili powder and onion powder together. Coat potatoes with oil-spice mixture and place on a baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven, turning once or twice, until golden brown and crispy, about 45 minutes.

4 medium potatoes
1 tablespoon olive oil
2-1/2 teaspoons paprika
3/4 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400°. Cut each potato into 12 wedges. In a large bowl, combine oil, paprika, salt and garlic powder. Add potatoes; toss to coat., Transfer to a greased 15x10x1-in. baking pan. Bake until tender, 40-45 minutes, turning once.

The key to achieving perfectly crisp "fries" is heating your sheet pan in a 500-degree oven for a good 10 minutes. When you toss the potatoes onto the blisteringly hot pan, magic happens: The potatoes sear and develop a truly crunchy crust. In terms of seasoning, we keep it simple with just salt and pepper, but feel free to experiment with adding a bit of chili or garlic powder, smoked paprika or cayenne to the mix.

1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes (about 3 large), cut into 1/4- to 1/2-inch-thick sticks
4 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • Arrange one oven rack at the lowest point. Place a large rimmed baking sheet there and heat oven to 500 degrees.
  • In a large bowl, toss together potatoes, the oil, salt, pepper and any additional seasonings. Carefully spread potatoes out on the preheated baking sheet and return to oven's lower rack. Roast until slightly golden and crispy, tossing after 15 minutes.
  • Reduce oven temperature to 425 degrees and bake 10 to 15 minutes more.

2 lbs russet potatoes, scrubbed
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon coarse grind pepper
1 dash with malt vinegar
dip in mayonnaise
ketchup, of course
dip in peanut satay sauce or tartar sauce
1 dash with knorr chicken bouillon granule
serve with country gravy

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F Cut potatoes into long thin strips and place on a large baking sheet. Drizzle with oil, then sprinkle with seasonings; toss well to coat.
  • Bake for 45 minutes, stirring 3 or 4 times during cooking, until potatoes are golden brown and crisp.
  • Serve with a few of the sauces or pick a favorite!

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Evenly space the oven racks to ensure even cooking.
  • (Watch this video or use a fry cutter.) Wash the potatoes, leaving the skins on. Slice off the ends of each potato, then slice off part of the side to make a base. Place the potato half cut side down and cut off a 3/8-inch slice, then lay the slice on its side and cut it into several long strips. Repeat until all potatoes have been cut into fries. The pieces can be uneven, but aim for as uniform of thickness as possible. See the video for full instructions!
  • Place the cut fries into a medium bowl and rinse with cold water until water is clear. Then fill the bowl with cold water and allow to rest for 10 minutes (while the oven preheats). Then drain the potatoes and dry them thoroughly with a clean dish towel.
  • Add the fries to a dry bowl and toss them with the olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, Old Bay, black pepper, and kosher salt. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Spread the fries in straight lines on the paper, placing them as far apart as possible.

  • Clean potatoes well and cut into sticks. You can peel the potatoes if you want but honestly, the crispy skins are the best part! Aim for ¼ to ½ thick sticks or anywhere in between. The more uniform your french fries, the more evenly they'll bake.
  • Place cut potatoes in a bowl filled with hot water. Doesn't need to be boiled or anything, just really hot tap water will work. Let sit for 15 to 30 minutes to remove some of the starch.
  • Remove potatoes from water and drain well. Dry potatoes thoroughly. My favorite method is with a salad spinner and really absorbent towels. The more moisture you remove, the crispier your oven baked french fries will be. (The salad spinner also works great for quickly drying freshly rinsed herbs!)
