MAKING A 3D END GRAIN CUTTING BOARD #3 - INSTRUCTABLES

From instructables.com
Estimated Reading Time 4 mins
  • The Drawings - 1. This pattern shows a 3D optical illusion of the zigzag wall lit by the sun. It is not a large board. The dimensions are 360x360 mm.
  • The Drawings - 2. The most complex is the middle part of each type. It is the same in both types. To make this part you should glue maple and walnut panels, cut off the parts at table saw at 45 degrees and then cut off the corners.
  • Wooden Panels. I used hard maple, black walnut and black cherry for this project. You may use other contrasting wood species. You need three types of wood: light wood (maple, hornbeam, birch), dark wood (padauk, walnut, sapele, purpleheart) and middle tone wood (movingui, cherry, oak).
  • Making Middle Part of the Square Blocks. Set the 45 degree cutting angle at your table saw and cut off sixteen strips. Plane them. Cut off the corners.
  • Assembling the Blocks. Make sixteen maple strips and sixteen cherry strips. Make them a little wider for future planing. Assemble eight 1st type blocks and eight 2nd type blocks.
  • Making Two Boards. The next step is making two boards. These boards consist of two types of the blocks you just made. Glue the boards. Next day plane the boards.
  • Assembling the Cutting Board. Cut off four strips from each board. Rotate all strips 90 degree end grain up. Assemble the cutting board. Glue the cutting board.
  • Last Operations. Plane the board. Sand two edges of the board at the belt sander. Saw off the sacrificial rails. Make the finger grips at the shaper or by the router.
  • Finishing. Finally treat the board with the mineral oil. You should firmly close the pores of the wood and prevent the ingress of moisture into the grains.

HOW TO MAKE A 3D CUBE CUTTING BOARD - THIS OLD HOUSE

  • Plane the boards to a uniform thickness. Run the boards through a thickness planer to flatten and smooth each face, and make them the same thickness: between 1 1⁄4 and 1 3⁄8 inches.
  • Rip the first bevels. Tilt the table-saw blade to a 60-degree angle. Check the angle with a magnetic digital angle finder (see Tip) or a protractor and bevel gauge.
  • Cut the remaining bevels. On one end of each workpiece, mark a cutline to complete the rhombus section. Measure all sides of the section to make sure they will be the same width after the cut, and adjust the saw’s fence so the blade will cut on the waste side of the cutline.
  • Glue the pieces together. Take three blanks and spread a thin coat of wood glue on each surface to be joined. Press the pieces together to make one six-sided piece, wiping off any glue that squeezes out with a damp rag.
  • Assemble the Pattern. Use a miter saw to cut each six-sided piece into 2-inch-thick pucks. You’ll need about 36 pucks to make this board. To achieve the 3D effect, arrange the pieces so that the same wood species touch only at their corners.
  • Glue and clamp the pucks. Lightly sand the sides of each puck with 120-grit paper; set aside a few to fill the edges. Wet down your work surface so the glued pieces won’t stick to it; then, starting at the board’s center, brush glue on the pucks’ sides and set them against one another following the pattern created in Step 5.
  • Flatten and fill both faces. When the glue is dry, remove the clamps and use either a belt sander or a slab-flattening router jig (see Tip) to flatten both board faces.
  • Cut to final size. Line up a framing square with the edges of the cutting board and mark perpendicular cutlines on all four edges. Trim the edges at the cutlines using a track saw or a circular saw guided by a straightedge.
  • Round the edges. Chuck the roundover bit into a compact router; run it counterclockwise around both board faces. Round over the corners with a random-orbit sander and 120-grit paper.
  • Finish with food-safe oil. Give the board a final sanding on all sides with the random-orbit sander and 220-grit paper. Clean the wood with denatured alcohol, then coat all sides with a food-safe cutting-board oil to seal the wood and make the pattern pop.
