This cake is make without milk or eggs and is moist, dark and delicious. A brain child of the depression era when ingenious cooks developed a cake that could be made without expensive and scarce ingredients.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup water

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Sift flour, sugar, salt, soda, and cocoa together into an 8x8 inch ungreased cake pan. Make three depressions. Pour oil into one well, vinegar into second, and vanilla into third well. Pour water over all, and stir well with fork.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 to 40 minutes, or until tooth pick inserted comes out clean. Frost with your favorite icing.

1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 cup water

Steps:

  • Sift dry ingredients into an ungreased (8x8) pan. Make 3 holes in dry ingredients.
  • In first hole, put 6 Tbsp oil.
  • In second hole, put 1 tsp vanilla.
  • In third hole, put 1 Tbsp vinegar.
  • Pour 1 cup water over all and stir until smooth.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
  • Frost or sprinkle with confectioner's sugar.
  • Can double recipe.

My cousin gave me this recipe years ago. Don't let the vinegar scare you away...it's undetectable in the cake. The cake pan size was not specified on the recipe card she gave me but I would use a tube pan or even 2, 8" layer pans.

2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cocoa
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 tablespoons vinegar
10 tablespoons melted butter or 10 tablespoons oil
2 cups cold water

Steps:

  • Mis together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt and cocoa.
  • Add vanilla, vinegar, butter and water and mix well.
  • Pour into lightly greased cake pan.
  • Bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees.

Easy cake recipe that can be mixed in the baking pan. I make this often as a quick snack. I learned this recipe in grade school and still love it after 25+ years!

1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
5 tablespoons melted butter
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 cup cold water

Steps:

  • Mix all dry ingredients in a 9x9 clear pyrex pan. I use a whisk which I find reduces the accidents of spilling over the edge of the pan. Lift the pan and ensure that all ingredients are well mixed.
  • Create 3 wells in the mix and pour vanilla, butter and vinegar into one each. Pour water over all and mix well. Again lift the pan to make sure that all dry ingredients are mixed into the liquid.
  • Bake for 30-40 mins at 350 until toothpick comes out clean.
