Vegan Barbeque Sauce image

This vegan barbecue sauce is a wonderful alternative to more-traditional sauces, giving you a quick and easy option to opening a jar. You can use it right away or allow to cool and store in a glass jar in the fridge.

1 (5.5 ounce) can tomato paste
⅔ cup apple cider vinegar
¼ cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons molasses
2 tablespoons mustard powder
2 tablespoons garlic powder
2 tablespoons smoked paprika
2 tablespoons sea salt
2 tablespoons fresh ground black pepper
2 teaspoons natural turbinado sugar (such as Sugar InThe Raw®)

Steps:

  • Blend tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, molasses, mustard powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, sea salt, ground black pepper, and sugar together in a blender.
  • Pour blended mixture into a saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until just heated through, about 5 minutes.

1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
1/4 cup tamari
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
2 large chipotle chiles in adobo
1/4 cup agave nectar
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1/8 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • Combine all the ingredients in an upright blender and puree for 20 seconds.
  • In a saucepan over meium-high heat, simmer the sauce, stirring often, until it has reduced and thickened to 2 cups.
  • Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

  • Preheat a saute pan over medium heat. Cook the chopped onion for 7 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow some color and caramelization to develop in the pan. You'll deglaze with water and other ingredients in a few minutes.
  • Once the onion is golden, add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly so the garlic doesn't burn. Deglaze the pan with 1/4 cup of water.
  • Add the remaining ingredients - tomato sauce, 1/2 cup water, apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, molasses, smoked paprika, chili powder, cayenne, black pepper, salt, tamari, and liquid smoke, if using. Stir to combine. Bring to a simmer, and cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until slightly reduced.
  • Remove from heat and let cool 15 minutes. Transfer to a blender, and blend until smooth. Pour into a jar, and allow to cool. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
