OLD FASHIONED ONION RINGS

Old Fashioned Onion Rings image

This is an actual recipe from a former employee of a popular drive-in restaurant. Crispy coated onion rings like the pro's make!

Provided by JeanieMomof3

Categories     Side Dish     Vegetables     Onion

Time 18m

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with seasoning salt, and serve.

ONION RINGS RECIPE

Onion Rings Recipe image

These onion rings are coated in beer batter and deep fried until golden brown. Homemade onion rings are even better than what you'd get at a restaurant, and they also happen to be fun to make!

Provided by Sara Welch

Categories     Appetizer     Side Dish

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 onions (Vidalia, Maui or yellow)
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour (divided use)
1 cup beer
1 3/4 teaspoons kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
oil for frying
1 tablespoon fresh parsley (chopped)

Steps:

  • Peel the onions and trim off the ends. Cut the onions crosswise into 1/2 inch thick slices. Separate the slices to create rings. Remove the smallest rings and reserve for a different use.
  • Place the buttermilk in a large bowl. Add the onions and soak for one hour.
  • Heat 3 inches of oil in a deep pot to 375 degrees F.
  • Place 3/4 cup of flour in a bowl.
  • In a medium bowl, mix together one cup of flour, beer, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  • Remove each ring from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off. Coat each ring in flour, then dip the rings into the batter.
  • Fry 6-8 rings at a time until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Repeat the process with the remaining onion rings.
  • Sprinkle with parsley, then serve immediately.

THE BEST ONION RINGS

The Best Onion Rings image

Our onion rings, made from white onions, are fried in peanut oil.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Appetizers

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cumin
Pinch of cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon coarse salt, plus more for seasoning
3/4 cup buttermilk
3/4 cup beer
1 large egg
4 cups peanut oil
2 large white onions (about 2 pounds), sliced crosswise 1/2 inch thick and separated into rings

Steps:

  • Combine flour, cumin, cayenne, and 1 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Slowly whisk in buttermilk, beer, and egg until smooth. Let batter stand 15 minutes.
  • In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium-high heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 375 degrees. Working in batches, dip onion slices in batter, turning to coat. Gently drop slices into hot oil. Cook, turning rings once, until golden brown, about 2 minutes. (Adjust heat between batches as necessary to keep oil at a steady temperature.)
  • Use a slotted spoon to transfer rings to a paper-towel-lined baking sheet to drain. Season immediately with salt.

CRISPY ONION RINGS

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     side-dish

Time 35m

Yield about 4 to 6 side dish serving

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 large Spanish onions, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick pieces
Whole milk, as needed
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 teaspoons fine salt, plus more for sprinkling
2 teaspoons chili powder (optional)
1 teaspoon ground cumin (optional)
2 lager-style beers (12-ounces each)
Vegetable oil for deep frying

Steps:

  • Put the onions in a large bowl and cover with milk. Let soak for 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, using a fine-sieve over a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, 2 teaspoons salt, chili powder, and cumin, if using. Stir in the beer until a smooth batter is formed. Set aside.
  • Drain the onions and transfer to a paper towel-lined baking sheet. Blot the onions with paper towels until dry.
  • In a large, wide heavy-bottomed pot, pour in the oil to a depth of about 2 inches. Place over medium heat and heat to 400 degrees F. (The oil must be heated to 400 degrees F. since the temperature drops oil to about 375 degrees F. when the onions are added.)
  • Working in batches, transfer about 8 to 10 of the onions to the batter and mix to coat well. Using tongs, pull several of the onions out of the batter, and let any excess batter fall back into the bowl. Carefully add to the oil and fry, flipping once, until golden brown and crispy, about 3 1/2 minutes per batch. Using the tongs, transfer to a dry paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain. Sprinkle with salt to taste. Repeat with the remaining onions. Serve immediately.
