SWEET AND SPICY NORI STRIPS

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/4 cup brown rice syrup
3 tablespoons sesame oil or 3 tablespoons peanut oil
1 tablespoon dark sesame oil
1/3 teaspoon cayenne
3 nori
coarse salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Line baking sheets with foil or parchment.
  • Combine rice syrup and both sesame oils in a small bowl, whisk to blend.
  • Stir in cayenne.
  • Tear each nori strip into 3 strips.
  • Place strips on prepared baking sheets.
  • Using pastry brush, thickly coat each strip w/ sesame-syrup mixture (whisk mixture occasionally).
  • Sprinkle each strip with salt.
  • Bake 10 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes to crisp.
  • brush each strip again with the sesame-syrup mixture and sprinkle with salt.
  • Bake another 10 minutes; remove and let stand for 10 minutes.
  • Break each strip in 2 to serve.

Shannon Talmage of Alexandria, Indiana combines tenter strips of pork with pineapple and sweet peppers in this colorful entree that's not too sweet or too sour. It gets a little zip from red pepper flakes and is sure to perk up any meal.

1 can (8 ounces) pineapple chunks
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 pound pork tenderloin, cut into 2-inch strips
2 teaspoons canola oil
1/2 cup green pepper strips
1/2 cup sweet red pepper strips
Hot cooked rice, optional

Steps:

  • Drain pineapple, reserving juice in a 1-cup measuring cup; set pineapple aside. Add enough water to pineapple juice to measure 1/2 cup. In a small bowl; combine the cornstarch, soy sauce, brown sugar, pepper flakes and reserved juice mixture until smooth. Set aside., In a nonstick skillet or wok, stir-fry pork in hot oil until meat is no longer pink. Remove and keep warm. In the same skillet, stir-fry peppers for 3-4 minutes or until just crisp-tender. , Return meat to skillet; add reserved pineapple. Stir pineapple juice mixture; add to skillet. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Serve with rice if desired.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/4 cup brown rice syrup
1/4 cup oil
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1/2 cup sesame seeds
3 nori
salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Whisk together the rice syrup and oil in a small bowl then stir in the cayenne.
  • Place the sesame seeds in a small bowl, with water to cover.
  • Swish to rinse and pour off any floaters.
  • Drain the seeds in a strainer, then transfer to a dry skillet and toast until fragrant.
  • Tear each nori sheet into three strips.
  • Use a pastry brush to paint each strip with a thick coat of the syrup mixture.
  • Sprinkle liberally with toasted sesame seeds and sprinkle liberally with salt.
  • Place the nori strips on a parchment covered baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes to allow the coating to set, then turn the strips over and paint the other sides with the syrup mixture.
  • Sprinkle as before with sesame seeds and salt.
  • Return to the oven for 10 minutes, then set aside for 20 minutes to crisp.
  • Break each strip in two pieces.
  • Great snack with hot sake or beer.
