SURVIVAL BREAD - KEEPS FOREVER RECIPE - (3.9/5)

Survival bread - keeps forever Recipe - (3.9/5) image

Provided by á-174887

Number Of Ingredients 6

cups oats
2 1/2 cups powdered milk
1 cup sugar
3 Tbl honey
3 Tbl water
1 pkg. lemon or orange Jell-O (3oz)

Steps:

  • Combine oats, powdered milk and sugar. In a medium pan, mix water, Jell-O and honey. Bring to a boil. Add dry ingredients. Mix well. (If the dough is too dry, add a small amount of water a teaspoon at a time.) Shape dough into a loaf. (About the size of a brick.) Place on cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Cool. Wrap in aluminum foil to store. This bread will keep indefinitely and each loaf is the daily nutrients for one adult. Well, the ingredients don't sound too bad, but that last line bothers me for some reason. Healthy food should deteriorate, shouldn't it? I have teenage boys and not much goes to waste around here, so I figured it was worth trying out. Even though the recipe doesn't specify, I used quick oats. As for the liquid, that little bit didn't even begin to cover it. It was so dry, I was still stirring mostly powder, so I ended up adding another 1/3 cup water plus more - almost 1/2 cup! It was very stiff, and very sticky. I wonder if I should have added less and got my hands in there and just packed it all together when it was still a lot drier. I don't know, but here's the results: It doesn't look so bad! AND - it actually tasted pretty good! It has a heavy powdered milk taste, which I'm not a big fan of, but with a little butter, or honey, or butter AND honey(!) I hardly noticed. I'm sure the recipe can be altered. Maybe less powdered milk and more oats? Unless it's formulated to an exact scientifically nutritional specification! :) But I doubt it. Has anyone else had any experience with survival bread? Or maybe if you have a different recipe you'd like to share, email it to me and I'll post it with your name. My email is [email protected]. I'm always looking for good recipes that are made from truly storage-type ingredients - things easy to store, and nothing out of the ordinary

HOW TO BAKE 13 DIFFERENT TYPES OF SURVIVAL BREAD - PRIMAL …

From primalsurvivor.net
  • Hardtack. Long-lasting and cheap, hardtack is the original survival food. The Egyptians, Romans, and British all relied on different types of hardtack because it was one of the few foods that wouldn’t spoil.
  • Pita Bread. The original pita bread recipe is approximately 4,000 years old and, for 10,000 years or so before that, people were substituting on various types of flatbread, which rose in the sun and were baked over a fire.
  • Scottish Bannocks. Scottish Bannocks is a type of fry bread that’s quick to make and easy to store. Its name comes from the Gaelic word bannach, meaning morsel, and it was originally cooked on a girdle or griddle known as a Bannock Stone.
  • Roosterkoek. South Africans love to braai which, to the rest of the world, is almost the same as a barbecue. The main difference is that everything is cooked over an open fire – from the starter to the dessert.
  • Chapati or Roti. Chapati and roti aren’t quite the same thing but they’re similar enough to be grouped together. While the roti can be made using almost any type of flour, chapati always uses atta flour, so in a survival situation, you’re more likely to make roti, even if you planned on creating chapati.

  • Bannocks. It seems the Roman soldiers were the ones who introduced bannocks to Scotland – then bannock was introduced to the US and Canada – and judging from comments for videos on how to make “native” bannocks people aren’t too happy about it being considered a First People’s staple.
  • Hardtack. Commonly referred to as hard tack or ship’s biscuits, in the past this is what was made and sealed in barrels on sea voyages lasting months, carried by soldiers on military campaigns and when people traveled long distances overland.
  • Roosterkoek. Popular in South Africa and Namibia, roosterkoek is simply bread dough cooked on a grill over an open fire. The pleasure is in eating it immediately after its been grilled – piping hot the traditional South African way with a healthy dollop of butter and spread thick with apricot jam.
  • Bread on a stick. No oven. No grill. No problem. A campfire, a stick, the ingredients for the dough and soon everyone will have something to eat. How fancy you want to get is up to you.
  • Roti or Chipatti bread. With it’s massive population India stands out as a country where bread staples are made simply. Anyone thinking of survival breads should be able to make roti, a flatbread that goes well with meat dishes and vegetable biryanis and curries.
