How To Cook Cabbage On The Stove image

Shredded cabbage is sauteed and lightly fried in butter to make a simple, delicious vegetable side dish without bacon or any meat for vegetarian lunch or dinner!

2 cups shredded cabbage (from about 1/4th of a medium sized cabbage)
salt (as needed)
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper powder (optional, adjust to your preference)

Steps:

  • Melt butter in a large pan and add the shredded cabbage.
  • Also add salt and stir well, stir fry for about a minute.
  • Cover with lid and cook in low heat for about 7 to 8 minutes until cabbage is cooked. If you are using more amount of cabbage, this may take few more minutes.
  • Once the cabbage is cooked, open the lid, stir well and add garlic powder.
  • Saute the cabbage in medium to high heat for about 2 to 3 minutes (stir in between) until the water from the cabbage is all evaporated and the cabbage is fried in butter and lightly browned (or to your preference).
  • Make sure to stir in between so the cabbage is evenly browned!
  • Sprinkle the delicious buttered fried cabbage with black pepper powder if desired, serve hot!
  • Buttered, sauteed and fried cabbage can be enjoyed as it is & it makes a wonderful side dish with rice, noodles, pasta, eggs etc or any dinner, lunch or meal that you prepare!

This is a good recipe. i love cabbage and beef so i founded a recipe in a cookbook that i was looking through this morning and found this and tried it and it is so good. the cookbook is the good food cookbook.

3 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
4 cups grated cabbage (use medium grater)
3/4 grated raw carrot (use medium grater)
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon mace
1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons water
pastry for double-crust pie
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon water

Steps:

  • Heat butter in large sauce pan. add onion and cook gently until tender, about 5 mionutes. add meat and cook and stir until all redness disappears. add cabbage, carrot, salt, pepper, mace, worcestershire sauce and water. cover and simmer 15 minutes. uncover and continue cooking until all excess liquid cooks away. meat should be moist but not wet. cool.
  • heat oven to 425 f
  • roll pastry very thin into oblongs or squares (roll 1/2 at a time) and cut into 6-ince (15-cm) squares. you should be able to make 18 squares so be sure to roll very thin.
  • lay the pastry squares out on the counter and top each one with 1/4 cup (60 ml) of the meat mixture. moisten 2 adjacent edges of the square with water and fold pastry over to form a triangle, pressing together along edges wtih the tines of a fork. put on large cookie sheets. beat egg yolk and water together an dbrush over tops of turnover (not on edges).
  • bake 25 to 30 minutes or until very well browned. serve hot.

2 Pot Stove Top Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls image

I love stuffed cabbage rolls but don't have the time or patience to stuff them. I usually make a casserole version in the oven but after fooling around with a few recipes I had on hand, I found this way much quicker and just as tasty. Makes a great busy weeknight dinner. I like to serve this with some warm bread or dinner rolls. I also like to make the rice with a recipe posted by Jan S, #53546 Perfect rice every time we cook it!

1 lb lean ground beef
3 cups cabbage, chopped
1/2 cup onion
1 garlic clove, minced
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
3/4 cup water, divided
salt and pepper, to taste
2 cups long grain rice, cooked

Steps:

  • In one pot, cook rice; you will want to end up with 2 cups of cooked rice.
  • In the second pot, a medium dutch oven, brown ground beef, onion and garlic; drain if needed and return to pot.
  • Add your soup and sauce, 1/2 cup water, cabbage, salt and pepper to taste; stir well.
  • Cook over medium heat, covered, for 15-20 minutes or until cabbage is soft.
  • Stir occasionally and add remainder 1/4 cup of water while cooking, if sauce gets too thick.
  • Divide rice onto 4 plates; top with the beefy tomato cabbage mix.
