This decidedly adult snack puts the "cocktail" back into fruit cocktail. The mix of ripe fruit and alcohol reminds us of sangria -- but eaten with a spoon.

4 cups fruit, sliced or pitted if necessary
1/2 cup sugar
3 sprigs basil, plus leaves for garnish
1 1/2 cup white rum, gin, or cachaca
Juice of 1 lime

Steps:

  • Place fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, grapes, pears, and plums in a large bowl. Toss with sugar and basil sprigs.
  • Stir in alcohol to cover fruit. Refrigerate at least 2 hours and up to 8 hours, stirring a few times.
  • To serve, remove basil sprigs, stir in lime juice, and garnish with basil leaves.

  • Combine 1/2 cup each sliced dried apricots and dried cherries, 3 strips lemon zest, the juice of 1 lemon, a spoonful of sugar, 1 cinnamon stick and 2 tablespoons water in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave 30 seconds. Toss with 2 segmented oranges, 2 sliced pears and a dash of vanilla; let sit at least 30 minutes. Serve with yogurt.

My late aunt who lived in Hawaii gave me this cherished recipe. She would prepare a traditional tropical meal for us whenever we visited and always included this fruity delight. 1 can (20 ounces) pineapple chunks, drained
1 can (15-1/4 ounces) sliced peaches, drained
1 can (15-1/4 ounces) sliced pears, drained
1 can (15 ounces) apricot halves, drained
1 can (11 ounces) mandarin oranges, drained
1 jar (10 ounces) maraschino cherries, drained
8 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks (3 inches)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon curry powder
1 cup white wine or white grape juice
1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted

Steps:

  • In a 3- or 4-qt. slow cooker, combine the first 6 ingredients. Place cloves and cinnamon sticks on a double thickness of cheesecloth. Gather corners of cloth to enclose seasonings; tie securely with string. Place bag in slow cooker. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, curry powder and wine; pour over fruit., Cook, covered, on low until heated through, 3-4 hours. Discard spice bag; sprinkle with almonds. Serve with a slotted spoon.

1 can (20 ounces) pineapple chunks, drained

1 can (15-1/4 ounces) pear halves, drained
1/4 cup maraschino cherries
1 cup orange juice
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 whole cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground mace
Dash salt

Steps:

  • In a 2-1/2-qt. baking dish, combine the pineapple, peaches, apricots, pears and cherries; set aside. In a small saucepan, combine the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil over medium heat; pour over fruit. Bake uncovered, at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until bubbly. Discard cloves. Serve warm.

1/4 cup white wine or white grape juice
2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 cup halved green grapes

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine the orange juice, wine or grape juice, lemon juice and sugar; mix well. In a large bowl, combine the fruit; add juice mixture and toss to coat. , Cover and refrigerate for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. Garnish with mint if desired.
