SOFT BREAD TWISTS

My family loves eating these zesty bread twists with a spaghetti supper. Soft and light as a feather, they have a perfect balance of garlic and oregano. Be sure to snatch one before passing them around the table.

Time 40m

Yield 2 dozen.

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
2 teaspoons sugar
1 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
1 cup warm milk (110° to 115°)
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup canola oil
1-1/4 teaspoons salt, divided
5-1/2 to 6 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 cup butter, melted
Pizza sauce or salsa, optional

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water; let stand for 5 minutes. Add the milk, egg, oil, 1 teaspoon salt and 4 cups flour; beat on low speed until smooth. Beat 3 minutes longer. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough., Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes (dough will be sticky). Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour., Do not punch down. Divide dough into eight pieces. Combine cornmeal and oregano; sprinkle over work surface. Roll each piece of dough in cornmeal mixture and shape into a 15-in.-long rope. Cut each rope into three pieces. Twist each piece and place on greased baking sheets., Bake at 400° for 8-12 minutes. Combine garlic powder and remaining salt. Immediately brush twists with melted butter, then sprinkle with garlic powder mixture. Serve with pizza sauce if desired.

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 to 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup water
6 teaspoons canola oil, divided
1-1/2 teaspoons honey
2 tablespoons butter, melted
4-1/2 teaspoons grated Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
PIZZA DIPPING SAUCE:
1 can (8 ounces) pizza sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
4-1/2 teaspoons cider vinegar

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour, yeast and salt. In a small saucepan, heat the water, 1-1/2 teaspoons oil and honey to 120-130°. Add to dry ingredients; beat just until moistened., Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes., Roll into a 9-in. square. Cut into 1-in. strips. Twist each strip and place 2 in. apart on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 20 minutes. Combine butter and remaining oil; brush over dough., Combine Parmesan cheese, parsley and garlic salt; sprinkle over dough. Bake at 350° for 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to a wire rack., Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine sauce ingredients. Bring to a boil. Serve with warm breadsticks.

1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt, divided
1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast
2 to 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup warm water (120° to 130°)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon paprika
Italian seasoning or grated Parmesan cheese, optional

Steps:

  • In a food processor, combine the sugar, 3/4 teaspoon salt, yeast and 2 cups flour. Cover and process for 5-10 seconds. While processing, gradually add warm water and oil in a steady stream. Process for 1 minute or until smooth and elastic. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water or flour if needed. , Turn onto a floured surface. Roll into a 15x12-in. rectangle. Cut into 12 strips. Fold each strip in half lengthwise; twist each strip several times. Pinch ends to seal. Place 2 in. apart on a greased baking sheet. , In a small bowl, combine the butter, garlic powder, paprika and remaining salt. Brush some over dough. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning or Parmesan cheese if desired. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 25 minutes. , Bake at 425° for 6-8 minutes or until golden brown. 1 can refrigerated bread sticks
3 tablespoons butter (melted)
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
  • Open the can of breadsticks. Separate the bread sticks and twist each one. Lay them out in a single layer and brush them with the melted butter. Sprinkle with the Italian seasoning.
  • Bake 10-12 minutes until breadsticks are golden brown. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt, divided
1 package fast rising yeast
2 -2 1/2 cups unbleached flour
2/3 cup warm water (120-130 degrees)
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
italian seasoning or grated parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • In a food processor or mixer, combine the sugar, 3/4 tsp.
  • salt, yeast and 2 c.
  • flour.
  • Mix well 5-10 seconds.
  • While processing, gradually add warm water and oil in a steady stream.
  • Mix for 1 minute or until smooth and elastic.
  • Check dough; add 1 to 2 Tbsp.
  • of water or flour if needed.
  • Turn onto a floured surface.
  • Roll into a 15" x 12" rectangle.
  • Cut into 12 strips.
  • Fold each strip in half lengthwise; twist each strip several times.
  • Pinch ends to seal.
  • Place 2" apart on a greased baking sheet.
  • In a bowl, combine butter, garlic powder and remaining salt.
  • Brush some over dough.
  • Sprinkle with Italian seasoning or Parmesan Cheese if desired.
