½ cup ketchup
½ cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon dry mustard
3 (14.5 ounce) cans great Northern beans, drained and rinsed
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 large onion, diced
4 ounces cooked ham, diced

Steps:

  • Mix barbeque sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard together in a 4-quart slow cooker until smooth. Stir beans, green bell pepper, onion, and ham into barbeque sauce mixture.
  • Cook beans on Low for 8 to 12 hours until thick.

2 onions, chopped
1 tablespoon chili powder
3/4 cup barbecue sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1 1/2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1/8 teaspoon hot red pepper sauce (or to taste)

Steps:

  • Combine first 4 ingredients in an electric slow cooker on low heat. Cover and cook about 7 hours or until beans are tender.
  • Drain cooking liquid.
  • Stir in remaining ingredients.
  • Set on high heat and cook uncovered 10-15 minutes, or until heated through.

1 pound dried pinto beans
1 onion, chopped
¾ green bell pepper, diced
2 celery ribs, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 pound Black Forest ham, cubed
1 teaspoon ground cumin, or to taste
1 tablespoon dried oregano, or to taste
2 bay leaves
1 tablespoon lard
5 cups chicken broth, or as needed to cover

Steps:

  • Cover pinto beans with water in a large bowl; allow beans to soak overnight.
  • Place onion, green bell pepper, celery, garlic, Black Forest ham, soaked pinto beans, cumin, oregano, bay leaves, and lard in a slow cooker.
  • Pour enough chicken broth into the slow cooker to cover the other ingredients.
  • Cook on High until beans are very tender, 5 to 6 hours.

1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup mild-flavor (light) molasses
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon ground mustard
2 cans (15.5 oz each) great northern beans, drained, rinsed
2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, drained, 1/2 cup liquid reserved

Steps:

  • In 10-inch skillet, cook bacon and onion over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until bacon is crisp and onions are tender; drain.
  • In 3 1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker, mix bacon, onion and remaining ingredients, including reserved liquid. Cover; cook on Low heat setting 3 to 4 hours.

1 pound dried pinto beans
1/4 cup sliced onions
8 cups water
1 garlic clove, minced
1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granules
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram
1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
Fresh thyme sprigs , optional

Steps:

  • Sort beans and rinse in cold water. Add beans to a greased 3-qt. slow cooker. Add the next 10 ingredients; stir., Cook, covered, on high 2 hours. Reduce heat to low; cook until beans are tender, 6-7 hours. Serve with slotted spoon. If desired, top with fresh thyme sprigs. , Freeze option: Freeze cooled beans in freezer containers. 1 package (16 ounces) dried great northern beans
2 smoked ham hocks (about 1/2 pound each)
2 cups water
1 medium onion, chopped
2 teaspoons garlic powder, divided
2 teaspoons onion powder, divided
1 cup barbecue sauce
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce, optional

Steps:

  • Rinse and sort beans; soak according to package directions. Drain and rinse beans, discarding liquid., In a 4-qt. slow cooker, combine beans, ham hocks, water, onion, 1 teaspoon garlic powder and 1 teaspoon onion powder. Cook, covered, on low 8-10 hours until beans are tender., Remove ham hocks; cool slightly. Cut meat into small cubes, discarding bones; return meat to slow cooker.
