CROCK POT BBQ STEAK SANDWICHES

Serve these yummy sandwiches to company, and they will be begging for the recipe!

3 lbs boneless beef round steak (cut into several large pieces)
2 onions (chopped)
3/4 c celery (thinly sliced)
1/2 c ketchup
1/2 c to 3/4 water
1/3 c lemon juice
1/3 c Worcestershire sauce
3 T brown sugar (packed)
3 T cider vinegar
2 t mustard
2 t salt
1 t pepper
1 t chili powder
1/2 t paprika
1/2 t hot pepper sauce
12 sandwich buns (split)

Steps:

  • Spray your crock pot with cooking spray
  • Put your meat chunks, onions and celery in your crock pot
  • Mix together everything else (except for your sandwich buns) and pour over your meat, onions and celery
  • Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, your meat will be tender when it is done
  • Take your meat out of your crock pot and let it cool slightly before shredding
  • Place shredded meat back in your sauce and stir until thoroughly mixed and heated through
  • Serve on your sandwich buns

1 boneless beef chuck roast (3 pounds)
1-1/2 cups ketchup
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon liquid smoke, optional
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
12 sandwich buns, split
Sliced onions, dill pickles and pickled jalapenos, optional

Steps:

  • Cut roast in half and place in a 3- or 4-qt. slow cooker. In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, brown sugar, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, liquid smoke if desired and seasonings. Pour over beef., Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or until meat is tender. Remove meat; cool slightly. Skim fat from cooking liquid., Shred beef with two forks; return to the slow cooker. Cover and cook for 15 minutes or until heated through. Using a slotted spoon, place 1/2 cup on each bun. Serve with onions, pickles and jalapenos if desired. Freeze option: Place individual portions of cooled meat mixture in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Microwave, covered, on high in a microwave-safe dish until heated through, gently stirring and adding a little broth / water if necessary.

This makes a fantastic meat for Philly steak sandwiches. You can even use lower grade roasts and have this turn out. It also makes its own au jus if you like to dip as I do. To serve, sautee a sliced onion and sliced green pepper in a skillet. Put meat on a sub bun and top with onion and green pepper and Swiss or provolone cheese on top of that. Leave open-faced and broil until the cheese just starts to brown. The top of the bun will brown fast so don't broil that until the cheese has completely melted and just starts to show color.

Steps:

  • Spread onion and garlic into the bottom of a slow cooker; layer beef over onion and garlic. Sprinkle cumin, black pepper, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, thyme, marjoram, and basil over beef; top with bourbon, soy sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. Pour beer over beef mixture and add beef bouillon cubes.
  • Cook on Low, stirring every hour or so, for 8 hours (or High for 4 hours).

I'm not a fan of ground beef, but I like the flavor of sloppy joes. This recipe incorporates the flavor of the classic sandwich with the lean cut of flank steak and the ease of a slow cooker.

1 ½ pounds beef flank steak
1 tablespoon steak seasoning (such as Montreal Steak Seasoning®)
1 tablespoon olive oil
¼ cup brown sugar
1 small onion, chopped
1 small red bell pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups tomato sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
6 hamburger buns, split and toasted

Steps:

  • Sprinkle the beef flank steak with steak seasoning on both sides. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat until the oil shimmers, and place the flank steak into the hot oil. Quickly brown the steak on both sides, about 5 minutes per side. Set the beef aside.
  • Stir brown sugar, onion, red bell pepper, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, and tomato paste together in a slow cooker until the brown sugar dissolves.   • To serve, shred the meat with 2 forks, or remove the meat, chop, and return to the sauce. Toast buns, and serve the sloppied steak on the toasted buns.

1 (2 pound) fully-trimmed flat iron steak
salt and pepper
8 ounces brown clamshell mushrooms, grilled, separated
salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon sherry vinegar
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons barbeque sauce
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
6 hot dog buns
½ cup mayonnaise, or as needed
1 cup arugula leaves, or as needed
1 cup quartered cherry tomatoes

Steps:

  • Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat, and lightly oil the grate.
  • Cut steak into 6 thick strips. Season generously with salt and pepper.
  • Grill mushrooms for 5-6 minutes over medium-high heat until they begin to wilt. Remove the stem end to separate the mushrooms.
  • Stir mushrooms in a bowl with salt and pepper, sherry vinegar, and extra virgin olive oil. Set aside.
  • Grill steaks for 3-4 minutes per side over medium-high heat, until medium rare or to desired doneness. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 140 degrees F (60 degrees C). Let rest for 5 minutes.
  • Whisk together barbeque sauce, cider vinegar and vegetable oil. Set aside.
  • Serve grilled steaks on hot dog buns with mayonnaise, arugula, cherry tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, and barbeque sauce mixture.
