Sloppy Joes with Chicken Gumbo for those who do not care for a tomato base. The secret ingredient in this recipe is Chicken Gumbo Soup.

2 pounds ground beef
1/2 onion, chopped, or 1 1/2 Tablespoons dried onions
1/2 cup ketchup
1 (10.5 ounce) can chicken gumbo soup
1/3 teaspoon black pepper
1 Tablespoon brown sugar
1 Tablespoon prepared mustard
1/2 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon sage (optional)

Steps:

  • Brown the ground beef and the onions in a large skillet.
  • Drain the ground beef.
  • Add the ketchup, non-diluted soup, pepper, brown sugar, mustard, sage and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Simmer together over low medium heat for at least 15-20 minutes.
  • Serve over hamburger buns and add a slice of cheese if you like.

My grandma made it for my mom, my mom made it for me and now I make it for my husband and son. It's the only way I know how to make it and it's the only kind I've ever tasted. We love it and it's supposedly not like traditional sloppy joes. It's easy, quick and requires very few ingredients.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 onion
2 (10 ounce) cans chicken gumbo soup
1/3 cup catsup
1 teaspoon salt
8 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • In skillet, cook chopped onion until soft.
  • Add ground beef, crumbling and breaking it up while cooking it.
  • When meat is brown, remove from heat and drain fat.
  • Place back on stove and add two cans of chicken gumbo soup. Stir together until it begins to bubble.
  • Stir in catsup.
  • Simmer for a few minutes, then remove from heat.
  • Ready to serve on hamburger buns.

1 pound ground beef
1/3 cup chopped onion
1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed chicken gumbo soup, undiluted
3/4 cup ketchup
1-1/2 teaspoons prepared mustard
6 to 7 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add the soup, ketchup and mustard; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 5-10 minutes or until mixture reaches desired thickness. Serve on buns.

  • Cook on High power (100%) for 3-5 minutes, stirring to break up meat.
