Provided by Allrecipes

Categories     Sloppy Joes

Time 2h

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 26

1 ½ cups mayonnaise
½ cup sour cream
¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
¼ cup diced green onions
1 ½ tablespoons chipotle chili powder
1 tablespoon garlic basil spread (see footnote for recipe link)
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 teaspoon ground cumin
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground chorizo
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 head cabbage, chopped
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 yellow bell pepper, diced
1 orange bell pepper, diced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
1 cup water, or as needed
¼ cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons chili powder
¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 lime, juiced
4 Italian-style hoagie buns, split lengthwise and toasted
1 tablespoon olive oil
8 eggs

Steps:

  • Combine mayonnaise, sour cream, 1/4 cup cilantro, green onions, chipotle chili powder, 1 tablespoon lime juice, garlic basil spread, and cumin in a small bowl. Stir until combined; season with salt and black pepper. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat; cook and stir chorizo, ground beef, and coriander until meat is browned, about 15 minutes. Drain and discard fat. Season with salt and black pepper.
  • Stir cabbage, green bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, orange bell pepper, jalapeno, and water into chorizo mixture; cook and stir until peppers soften, about 10 minutes. Add brown sugar and chili powder; cook and stir until water is evaporated and sauce is thick, about 10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle 1/4 cup cilantro and juice of 1 lime over the chorizo mixture and remove from heat.
  • Spread each hoagie bun with 1 tablespoon chipotle mayo. Evenly distribute the chorizo mixture among the 4 sandwiches.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat; fry eggs, 2 to 4 at a time if necessary, until whites are set but yolks are still soft, about 2 minutes per side. Place two eggs atop each sandwich.

SLOPPY JIMS

Sloppy Jims image

This twist on Sloppy Joe sandwiches is a real hit with anyone who eats it! When our son Jim was little, he never could remember the name, and he always thought the sandwiches were named after him, so it's what we eat now! And we love it with Nacho Cheese flavored Doritos. They're great for dipping up the "Sloppy" part when the sandwich is gone!

THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

The Best Sloppy Joes image

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 4 to 6 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

SLOPPY JOES

Sloppy Joes image

This simple version of sloppy Joes, the classic sandwich served in school cafeterias and at kitchen counters across the country, comes together in about 20 minutes and can be made with ground beef, chicken or turkey. As the name suggests, they are messy, so serve with a fork and plenty of napkins.

Time 22m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 8-ounce can tomato sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon molasses
1 garlic clove, finely minced
1/4 teaspoon orange zest
Pinch of ground cloves
Hot sauce to taste
1 pound ground beef
1/2 small onion, finely chopped
6 whole-wheat hamburger buns, toasted if desired

Steps:

  • In a saucepan over low heat combine the sauce ingredients. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Mix well, and simmer while preparing the meat.
  • Heat a heavy nonstick or cast-iron skillet, at least 10 inches in diameter, over medium-high heat. Add the ground sirloin, and saute, stirring occasionally, for 4 to 5 minutes, or until the meat is no longer pink. Turn the meat into a strainer or colander lined with paper towels, allowing the fat to drain off.
  • Add the onion to the pan, and sauté, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes, or until the onion is translucent. Return the meat to the pan, and add the sauce. Heat for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and season with salt, pepper or more hot sauce, if desired. Spoon 1/2 cup of the mixture over each bun. Serve immediately.
