HOW TO SEW A SIMPLE TOTE BAG WITH FLAT BOTTOM AND LINING

From theeverydayfarmhouse.com
  • Measure and Cut Your Fabric. For a large tote bag like mine. You will need to cut two pieces of the lining fabric 20″ wide and 21″ long. Also, two pieces of the outer fabric 20″ wide and 21″ long as well.
  • Sew the Outside. Press the midweight stabilizer on the pieces of fabric. Depending on your yardage, you may need to piece it together. Slowly press all around until it is fused.
  • Make and Attach the Pocket. To make the pocket, I stitched two 9X12″ pieces of fabric together, right sides facing. I left an opening to turn it right side out.
  • Sew the Bag Lining. Place the lining pieces right sides together, double-check your measurements for top and bottom to make sure you have it positioned correctly.
  • Attach the snap to the bag lining. This should be done before you assemble the bag. I used a magnetic snap that is just hand stitched in place.
  • Make the Tote Bag Handles. Fold the handle piece in half and press. Open it up and then press the edges into the centerline. I added a strip of the midweight stabilizer, this may not be necessary if you are using a heavier weight fabric.
  • Assemble the Bag. Lastly, tuck the lining inside the outer shell. Pin all along the top making sure the seams line up. Now using an 1/8″ seam allowance stitch all along the top of the bag.

EASY TUTORIAL ON HOW TO SEW A TOTE BAG WITH FLAT BOTTOM

From upstyledaily.com
  • Cut out your fabric. Cut out six square pieces of fabric - two patterned, two plain, and two interfacing - that are all 12⅝ inches. Next, cut out three more pieces - one patterned, one grey, and one interfacing - that are 12⅝ inches by 10¼ inches.
  • Shape your fabric. For all the required markings and the guide on how to shape your pieces, watch the video from 1:31 - 2:24. Once that’s done, iron the three pieces of interfacing you shaped onto the wrong side of the three pieces of squared patterned fabric.
  • Create the body. With your grey pieces and patterned pieces right sides facing, pin the straight edge and sew with a ⅜ inch seam allowance. Turn the sewed piece right side out (so the wrong sides are facing) and pin down the sewn edge.
  • Create your straps. Take your two fabric rectangles and fold them in half (lengthwise). Iron them and then unfold them. Fold the sides towards the line you created to make a bias tape that hides all raw edges.
  • Make the bag gusset and flat bottom. Get your long rectangular pieces (one patterned, one grey, and one interfacing) and iron the interfacing to the patterned piece.
  • Insert the button. Place your two body pieces right sides together and sew leaving a ⅜ inch seam allowance. Cut notches along the curved corners of the seam allowance to help the fabric lay flat.
  • Make the lining. Using your remaining plain pieces of fabric, attach the bottom pieces of the lining the same way you attached the bottom pieces of the body.
  • Finish the bag. Pull the body of the bag out through the gap, clip the gap closed, and sew it. Push the lining back into the body of the bag, iron out the edges, and add one final top seam around the opening.
