POPOVER PIZZA CASSEROLE



Popover Pizza Casserole image

This easy, in-the-oven-in-ten minutes ground beef casserole is topped with cheese and a popover-like topping.

1 pound ground beef
1 jar or can (14 to 15 ounces) pizza sauce
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese (8 ounces)
2 medium green onions, chopped (2 tablespoons), if desired

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 425°.
  • Cook beef in 10-inch skillet over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until brown; drain. Stir in pizza sauce. Heat to boiling; reduce heat to low and keep warm.
  • Beat eggs, milk, oil, flour and salt with wire whisk until foamy. Spoon beef mixture into ungreased rectangular baking dish, 13x9x2 inches. Sprinkle with cheese. Pour egg mixture over cheese. Sprinkle with onions.
  • Bake uncovered 25 to 30 minutes or until puffy and golden brown. Serve immediately.

This is a great casserole that takes no time to put together. Really nice with a salad or garlic bread.

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 1/2 lb ground beef
1 c chopped onions
1 c chopped green peppers
1/2 tsp oregano
1 pkg dry spaghetti sauce mix
dash salt
1/2 c water
1/8 tsp tobasco sauce
mozzarella cheese slices
BATTER
1 c milk
1 Tbsp oil
2 eggs
1 c flour
1/2 tsp salt

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 400 F
  • 2. Brown beef, drain fat and add remaining ingredients except cheese and batter. Mix well and simmer 15-20 minutes.
  • 3. Pour into casserole dish and cover with cheese slices. Beat ingredients for batter for 1 minute at medium speed. Pour over base.
  • 4. Spread to cover all. Sprinkle with parmesan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or till golden brown and puffed.

1 c chopped onion
1 c chopped green pepper
1 jar(s) pizza sauce
2 c mozzarella cheese
POPOVER BATTER:
1 c milk
1 Tbsp oil
2 eggs
1 c flour
1/2 tsp salt

Steps:

  • 1. Brown ground beef with onion and green pepper. Add pizza sauce and simmer for 10 minutes. Set aside.
  • 2. In a bowl, combine milk, oil, and eggs. Beat one minute on medium speed. Add flour and salt to egg mixture and beat for 2 minutes or until smooth.
  • 3. Spread meat mixture into a 9 x 13 pan. Top with cheese. Carefully pour batter over cheese. Bake at 400º for 25 minutes.

I got this recipe from my sister-in-law. The kids always eat their dinner when this is on the table! You can, of course, alter the toppings to suit your own tastes. Cheese and pepperoni is probably the easiest.

3 (6 ounce) cans refrigerated buttermilk biscuits (each biscuit cut into four to six pieces)
1 (26 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
2 cups mozzarella cheese

bell pepper
sausage
ground beef
sliced ham
pineapple
pepperoni
mushroom

Steps:

  • In a casserole dish, place cut up biscuits.
  • Cover with spaghetti sauce.
  • Spread toppings of your choice over spaghetti sauce.
  • then pile on the cheese.
  • Cook at 400 degrees for 26 minutes, checking periodically.

My daughter adores this recipe. She often requests it be prepared when her friends are coming over. I sometimes add pepperoni slices on top of the cheese and mushrooms in the meat mixture.

1 clove garlic, minced
1 jar spaghetti sauce
8 ounces mozzarella cheese, sliced
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon oil
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup flour
1/2 cup parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Brown meat.
  • Add all but cheese.
  • Simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • In a small bowl, beat the milk, oil and eggs for 1 minute on medium speed.
  • Add flour and salt, beat 2 minutes more on medium speed until smooth.
  • Pour hot meat mixture into a 13x9 inch pan.
  • Place cheese on top.
  • Pour batter over cheese, covering filling completely.
  • Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake 25-30 minutes at 400 degrees.
  • Serve immediately.
