War Breads have been around since wars were fought ( see Old Teatament Ezekiel 4:9). World War I war breads usually were made from wheatless or wheat-reduced recipes, there by saving wheat "fuel"...

2 c rye,barley or oat flour
4 Tbsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 c peanut butter
1/4 c sugar or corn syrup
1 c milk

Steps:

  • 1. Sift flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl; add peanut butter and sugar or syrup and mix. Add milk and mix well. Bake in a greased 8 1/2-by- 4 1/2 inch loaf pan in a moderate oven (350 degrees) 30 to 35 minutes.
  • 2. Cut into thin slices, it makes very good sandwiches. This can also be baked as biscuits. This is best when a day old. (true)

I am a nine year old third grader and made up this recipe with a little help from mom. It is really good with a thin layer of peanut butter spread on it. I hope you enjoy it!

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons crunchy peanut butter
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 egg
3 cups bread flour
1 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast

Steps:

  • Place ingredients in bread machine pan in the order suggested by the manufacturer. Select white bread setting. Start.
  • To bake bread in oven: select dough or manual cycle. Once cycle is complete, shape dough and place in a greased loaf pan. Allow to rise in a warm spot until doubled in size. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) oven for 35 to 45 minutes or until a thermometer inserted in the center of the loaf reads 200 degrees F (95 degrees C).

When my son was a toddler, this was his very favorite bread. Of course, it had to be served with peanut butter and jelly!

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup flour
1/2 cup quick oats
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup peanut butter
1 egg
1 1/2 cups milk

Steps:

  • Combine the first seven ingredients.
  • Cut in the peanut butter as if it were shortening.
  • Blend the egg and milk together, and stir into the above mix.
  • Mix well.
  • Pour into greased and floured loaf pan.
  • Bake 1 hour and 10 minutes at 350.
  • Cool 10 minutes in pan before removing bread.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 large egg, room temperature
1 cup whole milk
3/4 cup peanut butter
Grape jelly, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, whisk egg, milk and peanut butter until smooth; stir into flour mixture just until combined. Pour into a greased 8x4-in. loaf pan. , Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 50-60 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack. If desired, serve with jelly.
