THREE BEAN CROCK POT CASSEROLE

Three Bean Crock Pot Casserole image

Easy three beans and three steps (a,b,c). Good for open houses or where people drop in. Stays warm in crock pot. I kinda think this is from the 1950's. My great grandma, my grandma, my mom and now I cook it. One of my sisters cooks it and I'm working on my daughter to cook it too! (diabetes substitutions at bottom of recipe).

Time 36m

Yield 8-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 cup warm water
2 (15 ounce) cans baked beans, Bush name, undrained
2 (12 ounce) cans lima beans, drained
2 (12 ounce) cans kidney beans, drained
2 1/3 cups ketchup
1/4 cup picnic prepared mustard
1/3 cup brown sugar or 1/3 cup dark molasses
2/3 cup wrights liquid smoke
1/3 cup genuine apple cider vinegar
2 lbs lean hamburger
1/4-1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup Spam (optional) or 1 cup ham, chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • (Diabetes substitutions at bottom of recipe).
  • Before Part take 1 cup warm water and put it into the crock pot and turn it on high. This is sort of to preheat the pot; without water it would crack see.
  • Part take the beans section and warm in microwave or on stove top until steaming. Stir and pour into the crock pot (nice to use maple or honey flavor beans).
  • Part ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, liquid smoke, vinegar. This is like a sauce. Simmer and stir on stove top or microwave until turns brown and smells less vinegary (20 minutes maybe). Dump into the crock pot and stir well.
  • Part meat and onion; brown on stove top or in microwave together then dump it in pot.
  • See how it goes a, b c all warm before going into the pot. Put on the lid and keep on high for on hour and 5-8 hours on low then serve with rice and cornbread, cheese shredded on top or glass of milk Complete meal for open houses or crowds of people. Stays warm in pot and is easy to self serve.
  • Diabetes substitutions: Can substitute tomato paste for ketchup and powdered mustard for regular. Add water a little and artificial sweetener comes in brown sugar flavor. The Bush baked beans can use navy beans plain and use brown rice instead of white rice. See these are all diabetes or trying to lose wight substitutions. You can also add wheat germ to the corn bread.

Patty's Three Bean Hot Dish (crockpot) image

I got this really good baked bean recipe from my friend Patty. You cook it in the crockpot. You can change the different beans you use. Like I have used black beans and or red beans instead of butter beans. Or one can of each.

BETTY'S 3-BEAN HOT DISH (A LA MINNESOTA)

Betty's 3-Bean Hot Dish (a la Minnesota) image

My dearest 80-something friend Betty gave me this sensational, hearty recipe for a 3-bean hot dish. She's Finnish, I believe this has roots to home, and it's really tasty! My hubby, who hates beans, demanded I get the recipe. We first devoured it at Betty and Jim's 60th wedding anniversary! Perfect for potlucks.

THREE-BEAN BAKED BEANS (OVEN OR CROCK POT)

Three-Bean Baked Beans (Oven or Crock Pot) image

This is my summer time dish for all BBQ's and I always double the recipe. If you enjoy baked beans you have to try this one. It's from a '98 TOH and whenever I make it someone always asks for the recipe. I have personally never made it in the oven since the crock pot does just fine and who wants to heat up the house in the summer? When using the crock pot I will take the lid off for the last hour or so (+/-) of cooking - this will thicken it up if you like your beans thick right at serving. Leftovers freeze very well.

THREE SISTERS BEAN PATTIES WITH RASPBERRY AIOLI

Three Sisters Bean Patties With Raspberry Aioli image

The Three Sisters - corn, beans, and squash - are foundational foods of the Haudenosaunee people. This recipe is an Indigenous-inspired twist on falafel that brings together the sweetness of squash with savory red beans and cornmeal. Combined with an easy raspberry aioli, these nutritious patties can be eaten alone, tossed in salads or tucked into sandwiches. -Kevin Noble Maillard

Provided by Ethan Tyo

Categories     dinner, beans, main course

Time 2h

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 small butternut squash (about 1½ pounds)
Olive oil, for brushing squash
Fine sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 1/2 cups/275 grams medium-grind white (or yellow) cornmeal, plus more if needed
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 (15-ounce) cans red kidney beans (or other red beans), drained (about 3 cups)
1/2 sweet onion, minced (about ¾ cup)
1/4 cup sunflower butter
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon dried sage
6 ounces fresh raspberries, finely chopped (scant ⅔ cup)
1 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh sage

Steps:

  • Start the patties: Heat oven to 350 degrees. Halve the butternut squash lengthwise and scoop out the seeds. Drizzle the cut squash with oil, season generously with salt and pepper, and place flat side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Roast until the skin is sunken and a fork passes through easily, 30 to 40 minutes.
  • While the squash cools, add the cornmeal, baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper to a large bowl; whisk to combine. Scrape and remove ¾ cup squash from its skin with a fork and add to bowl (the remaining squash will keep, refrigerated, for 3 to 4 days). Add the beans, onion, sunflower butter, garlic and dried sage. Stir to combine, then transfer the mixture to a food processor and pulse until uniform. (Though a food processor yields better results, you could also simply mash the ingredients with a masher or your hands until well incorporated.) The mixture should be thick and pliable; if not, add more cornmeal, 1 tablespoon at a time, and mix thoroughly. Cover the mixture and let rest in the fridge for 10 minutes until slightly firmer.
  • While the mixture chills, make the aioli: In a small bowl, combine the chopped raspberries, mayonnaise, maple syrup and sage until well mixed. (Makes 1⅓ cups.) Cover and refrigerate while you cook the patties.
  • Finish the patties: Remove the cornmeal mixture from the fridge. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Using 1 heaping tablespoon (with almost 2 tablespoons of the cornmeal mixture) at a time, begin to shape small 1½- to 2-inch balls, adding them to the prepared baking sheet and pushing each to flatten slightly. Continue until all the dough is used; you should have about 24 patties. Bake on the prepared baking sheet for 20 to 30 minutes, until golden brown and crisp. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving with aioli.

3 BEAN HOT DISH

3 Bean Hot Dish image

This is a recipe that has been in my family for many years. It is a very simple recipe. Everyone loves it and it is can be made in the oven or a crock pot; so we bring it to potlucks a lot! Always a hit!

Provided by NaNa BKM

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 1h30m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 lb hamburger
1/2 lb bacon
1/2 cup onion, chopped
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon mustard
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1 (15 1/2 ounce) can butter beans
1 (15 1/2 ounce) can kidney beans
1 (20 ounce) can baked beans (Bush's)

Steps:

  • Brown the bacon & let it cool. Some of the bacon grease may be saved and added in with the hamburger if you choose too.
  • Cut or break the bacon into bite size pieces.
  • While bacon is cooling brown the hamburger with the chopped onion and pepper, then drain of the grease if needed.
  • Add the bacon (and bacon grease if you choose to) to the hamburger.
  • Mix together the ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, vinegar and salt.
  • Stir this in to the hamburger/bacon mixture.
  • Stir in all the cans of beans.
  • Bake in large baking dish in 350 degree oven for 1 hour or in your crock pot on high about 3-4 hours.
  • A few hints for everyone. Any leftovers may be frozen, so you may enjoy at a later time without the prep work. You may also use your own favorite beans instead of those suggested in the recipe -- lima beans, pork and beans, red beans, northern beans, etc. Sometimes, depending on how many people I am serving, I will use 1 1/2 lbs. of hamburger and an extra can or 2 of beans and it is always just as good.
  • Enjoy!
