  • Hydrangeas. The South's favorite flowering shrub can also be grown in containers, usually in part sun or shade. If your porch is sunny during the hottest part of the day, no problem.
  • Lantanas. Lantana is a long-lasting, dependable bedding flower or small shrub that craves the summer sun. This flower thrives throughout hot, dry summers in planters, window boxes, or hanging baskets, continuing to bloom until the first frost.
  • Verbenas. Easy-to-grow verbena bears showy clusters of red, pink, purple, or white tubular flowers. With moderate water, this pollinator-friendly plant will survive through drought and heat.
  • Geraniums. Potted geraniums add striking summer color to front porches. Choose a heat-tolerant selection in the Americana, Eclipse, Maverick, or Orbit series.
  • Pentas. Tropical pentas have bright clustered flower heads and thrive in full sun. Be sure to give these flowers plenty of water; they won't survive a drought.

7+ PERFECT PLANTS FOR AN EDIBLE FRONT PORCH GARDEN

  • Herbs. I’m listing herbs as one category here, even though there are plenty to choose from. Almost all of them grow well in containers, they’re usually easy to grow, and they enhance darn near any other vegetable you cook with.
  • Tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes are a winner for container gardening, but you don’t have to limit yourself here. Determinate, or bush-type, tomatoes grow to about three or four feet tall and will produce wonderfully delicious fruits.
  • Lettuce. Leaf lettuce grows quickly and does very well in containers. You may never need to buy lettuce at the grocery store again.
  • Peas. Peas grow quickly, and they’re so darn good straight from the pod. If you could grow candy in a garden, it would be peas. Not to mention, pea greens are seriously tasty.
  • Radishes. Some varieties of radishes are ready to harvest within three weeks of planting, but even slower-growing varieties like the heirloom Salad Rose only take about five weeks from seed to harvest.

15 PLANTS PERFECT FOR GROWING ON YOUR FRONT PORCH - THE SPRUCE

From thespruce.com
  • Hostas. These lush flowering perennials are a gardener's BFF. They thrive in shade and partial shade, come back every year, and bloom with attractive purple flowers in summer.
  • Geraniums. Garden geraniums, also called zonal geraniums, add a cheerful pop of color to front yards and container gardens. They'll grow best with bright sunlight, so they're ideal for porches with southern or western exposure, but they can also do well in part shade.
  • Rosemary. Rosemary and other hardy perennial herbs like lavender, sage, thyme, and oregano make excellent plants for a sun-drenched front porch. Plus, you'll have a kitchen herb garden right outside your door.
  • Hen and Chicks. Succulents are known to need full sun, but some types—including hen and chicks, also called sempervivum—can do well in a spot with part shade, like your front porch.
  • Wax Begonias. Wax begonias are widely planted as bedding plants, along pathways, and in containers for good reason. These attractive annuals flower reliably even in shade or part shade, giving a north-facing or east-facing front porch a pop of color in summer.
