I have made dog food ever since my dogs were puppies - 4 years now! They are very healthy and have never had any problems. You can also add it to their kibble. They love it! My dogs are large breed so they get 2 cups in the a.m. and p.m.

OAMC HOMEMADE DOG FOOD

OAMC Homemade Dog Food image

Once a month cooking (OAMC) for the canine member of your family! For a 50lb dog this makes enough quantity for 2 weeks, double it or make two batches to stock your freezer with a month's supply of highly nutritional dog food. My 9-month old black-mouth cur rescue dog was a very picky eater and losing weight before I started making him this homemade dog food. I researched canine nutritional needs and combined recipes to come up with this recipe, keeping the proportions and nutrients inline with recommendations I found online. Vegetables should either be chopped to small pieces or pureed because dogs do not chew their food so large pieces will pass through undigested. Overcook the rice and vegetables, the softer the better! Satisfies the fussiest of eaters, every dog that has tried this recipe has licked his/her chomps in gratitude and licked his/her bowl clean! Rivals the most expensive commercial dog foods in nutritional value at a fraction of the cost!

Time 2h

Yield 42 cups, 14 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

24 cups water
8 cups brown rice
2 lbs ground turkey
2 (15 ounce) cans mackerel, chopped
2 cups carrots, grated
1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach
1 (16 ounce) package frozen broccoli and cauliflower, chopped
1 (16 ounce) package frozen peas (may substitute with french-cut green beans)
1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin
16 ounces ricotta cheese
3/4 cup flax seed, ground in a coffee grinder

  • Stir ground flax into ricotta/cottage cheese and then stir the cheese/flax mixture, along with the pumpkin, into the rice/turkey/fish/vegetables mixture.
  • For a 50lb dog fill freezer bags with 2.5 cup portions, freeze.
  • Thaw in refrigerator for 24hrs before feeding time. Daily portions can be divided into two meals.

CAROLINA CHILI DOGS (OAMC)

Carolina Chili Dogs (Oamc) image

Another fabulous recipe found on iVillage.com and placed here for safe keeping. I LOVE a good Chili Dog and this Hot Dog Chili is perfect. The chili can be made ahead of time (instructions for OAMC below as well).

Provided by januarybride

Categories     Meat

Time 40m

Yield 8 hot dogs, 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 hot dogs
8 hot dog buns
1 1/4 lbs extra lean ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon cider vinegar or 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (optional)

Steps:

  • Begin making the Carolina Chili. (To avoid greasy chili, be sure to choose a very lean ground beef since the beef is not browned and drained in this recipe). Place the beef and 2 cups of water in a 4 1/2-quart Dutch oven or soup pot over high heat. Bring the water to a boil.
  • Add the chopped onion to the beef. When the water boils again, reduce the heat to medium. Stir to begin breaking up the meat.
  • Add the tomato paste, ketchup, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, salt, and pepper, if using. Stir well until the tomato paste has dissolved and the meat is mostly broken up.
  • Continue to cook the chili at a slow boil, stirring about every 5 minutes or so, until the mixture is thick, about 15 minutes. As the mixture thickens, you may need to reduce the heat to medium-low or low to prevent sticking.
  • Many Southerners prefer chili that is finely ground (roughly the consistency of cooked oatmeal) because it's easier to spread on a hot dog and easier to eat as well. To try it this way, place the chili (cooled at least 20 minutes) in a blender or food processor and blend on high until finely ground, 30 to 45 seconds.
  • While the chili simmers and about 12 to 15 minutes before you plan to serve the chili dogs, turn on a gas grill to medium-high.
  • Place the hot dogs on the hot grill and cook until heated through and just beginning to brown all over, about 5 minutes. Heat the buns on the grill, if desired. To serve, place each hot dog in a bun and smother with chili.
  • Make-ahead: The chili can be refrigerated, covered, for up to 2 days or it can be frozen for up to 2 months. * If the chili has been frozen, thaw it in a microwave oven on the defrost setting, following the manufacturer's directions and stirring after each 1-minute interval, then reheat. * To reheat, place the chili in a microwave-safe container, cover with a paper towel, and microwave on high until heated through, 2 to 3 minutes for 1 cup, stopping once halfway through.

SIMPLE DOG FOOD RECIPE

Simple Dog Food Recipe image

From "Foods Pets Die For" by Anne Martin Note: Cooking for your pet is a great way to provide good quality, safe foods. However, you should consult with your vet and do your research to make sure that your dog is meeting his nutritional needs; amounts and types of foods to be fed vary greatly depending on size, weight, age, and any health issues that your dog has.

HOMEMADE GRAIN-FREE ORGANIC DOG FOOD

Homemade Grain-Free Organic Dog Food image

If you are wanting to get your fur babies off of store-bought kibble, here's an option for homemade dog food where you control the ingredients. Change it as you like to meet your own pup's needs. You could also alternate between beef and chicken, or vary it as you desire. My dog is beyond excited to get her bowls of it!

Provided by Loves to Cook

Categories     Pet Food

Time 9h50m

Yield 30

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 pounds organic carrots
3 pounds organic apples, peeled and cored
4 pounds fresh or frozen green beans, thawed
2 (16 ounce) packages organic frozen blueberries
1 pound organic baby spinach
¾ cup olive oil, divided
¾ cup coconut oil, divided
3 pounds 85% organic, grass-fed lean ground beef
2 (15 ounce) cans pumpkin puree

Steps:

  • Wash and trim ends of carrots. Peeling is unnecessary if using organic ones. Cut into small enough pieces to chop in a food processor and set aside. Chop apples, green beans, blueberries, and spinach in the food processor and set aside.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon coconut oil in a large (at least 10-quart) stockpot and saute carrots until softened, about 5 minutes. Add apples, green beans, blueberries, and spinach and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until cooked through, 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon coconut oil a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir ground beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Add to stockpot. Add pumpkin puree, remaining olive oil and coconut oil and mix everything until well combined. Cover and allow to cool.
  • Refrigerate for 8 hours, or overnight. Divide desired portions into resealable plastic bags, removing as much air as possible, and freeze until needed.

BARBECUED HOT DOGS OAMC

Barbecued Hot Dogs OAMC image

This is the best way I've ever eaten hot dogs. My mom made it for my family growing up and I still love it. Try it with mashed potatoes so the sauce can be used as gravy. The longer you simmer it, the better it tastes!

Provided by Hwin5168

Categories     Meat

Time 1h

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 (12 ounce) package hot dogs
1 tablespoon oil
3/4 cup ketchup
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 medium chopped onion
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Wash and dry hot dogs. Cut in half lengthwise.
  • Brown hot dogs both sides in skillet with oil.
  • Mix remaining ingredients in a bowl and pour over hot dogs in skillet.
  • Simmer for ½ to 1 hour. Add more water if necessary.
  • If you want to freeze this, I find it's best to do it before the simmering step, right after you've added everything together. Just thaw and simmer!
