"You can use any dried fruit for these tender scones, but my favorite is a mix of dried cranberries and golden raisins," says Della Dunsieth of New Castle, Pennsylvania. "Don't overmix or you'll have a hard, dense scone."

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup cold butter
3 tablespoons 2% milk
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/4 teaspoon coarse sugar

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, combine milk and 2 tablespoons beaten egg; add to crumb mixture just until moistened. Stir in cranberries. , Turn onto a floured surface; knead gently 6-8 times. Pat into a 6-in. circle. Cut into four wedges. Separate wedges and place on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Brush with remaining egg; sprinkle with coarse sugar. , Bake at 425° for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

¾ cup milk
1 teaspoon white vinegar
2 cups all-purpose flour
¼ cup white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon grated nutmeg
½ cup butter, chilled and cut into small pieces
1 cup dried cranberries
½ cup chopped pecans
1 egg white, beaten
1 ½ cups confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Combine 3/4 cup milk and vinegar in a bowl; let stand until milk is curdled, about 5 minutes.
  • Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg in a large bowl; cut in butter with a pastry blender. Smooth remaining butter clumps with hands; stir in milk mixture, cranberries, and pecans. Knead until dough comes together in a ball.
  • Place dough onto a floured work surface. Roll out with a rolling pin to 3/4-inch thickness. Cut into long, 2-inch wide strips with a sharp knife; cut strips into triangles. Transfer to the baking sheet. Brush tops with egg white.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until tops are golden brown, about 15 minutes.
  • Combine confectioners' sugar and 2 tablespoons milk in a small bowl; mix until combined. Drizzle over scones.

2 tablespoons water
1 cup dried cranberries
2 cups Bisquick™ Original or Reduced Fat baking mix mix
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 tablespoons firm butter or margarine
2/3 cup buttermilk or fat-free (skim) milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup chopped walnuts
1 tablespoon margarine or butter, melted

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 425°. Pour water over cranberries in 1-quart microwavable dish; cover with plastic wrap, folding back one side to vent. Microwave on High 1 minute. Uncover cranberries; cool.
  • Mix Bisquick mix, sugar and cinnamon in large bowl. Cut in 3 tablespoons butter, using pastry blender or crisscrossing 2 knives, until mixture looks like fine crumbs. Stir in butter-milk, vanilla, cranberries and walnuts just until moistened.
  • Drop dough by 1/4 cupfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with additional sugar if desired. Bake 10 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Brush 1 tablespoon melted butter over warm scones and sprinkle with sugar if desired.

1/2 cup butter
1 egg

3/4 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
sugar, to sprinkle

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Spray a baking sheet with non stick cooking spray.
  • Combine the sour cream and baking soda in a small bowl.
  • Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar and salt in a large bowl.
  • Cut in butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  • Combine egg and vanilla extract with sour cream mixture.
  • Gently stir into the flour until moistened. DO NOT OVERMIX!
  • Knead dough 10 times only.
  • Place dough on baking sheet and pat into 3/4" thickness.
  • Cut into 6 wedges and separate so the scones are not touching. Leave adequate space for expansion.

1/2 cup minus 2 tablespoons buttermilk
1 egg

1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
1 cup dried cranberries, chopped

Steps:

  • Mix dry ingredients well.
  • Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse pebbles.
  • Beat together egg, vanilla, and buttermilk, then add to dry ingredients and mix briefly (do not overmix dough).

¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt
¼ cup butter, chilled and diced
1 cup fresh cranberries, roughly chopped
⅓ cup white sugar
1 grated zest of one orange
½ cup chopped walnuts
¾ cup half-and-half cream
1 egg

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, stir together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, toss cranberries with sugar; add to flour mixture along with orange peel and nuts. Mix lightly.
  • In another bowl, beat together cream and egg; slowly pour into dry ingredients, mixing with rubber scraper until dough forms. Knead dough 4 or 5 times, being careful not to over handle. 1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 cup maple syrup

1 egg
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2 teaspoons milk
1 teaspoon maple syrup

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 425ºF.
  • Grease cookie sheet.
  • Mix all ingredients except Maple Glaze until soft dough forms.
  • Turn dough onto surface dusted with Bisquick; roll in Bisquick to coat.
  • Shape into ball; knead 10 times.
  • Pat dough into 8-inch circle on cookie sheet (if dough is sticky, dip fingers in Bisquick).
  • Cut into 8 wedges but do not separate.

  • To make glaze, beat all glaze ingredients until smooth.
  • Drizzle scones with glaze.
