½ cup water
¼ cup honey
2 cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground coriander
16 whole cloves
1 orange, cut into 8 wedges
4 ¼ cups red wine

Steps:

  • Pour water into a large pot over medium heat. Add honey, cinnamon sticks, allspice, nutmeg, and coriander. Stir until honey is dissolved.
  • Push 2 cloves into the skin of each orange wedge. Add to the pot. Pour in red wine. Increase heat and simmer gently, about 45 minutes. Make sure mixture does not boil.
  • Discard orange wedges and cinnamon sticks. Divide mulled wine among coffee mugs and serve hot.

1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
2 whole star anise
3 cinnamon sticks
One 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
3 large strips orange zest
3 large strips lemon zest
Two 750-ml bottles red wine
3/4 cup honey

Steps:

  • In the basket of a coffee percolator place the allspice berries, peppercorns, star anise, cinnamon sticks, ginger and citrus zest. Pour the wine and honey into the percolator. Attach basket, cover and let percolate for 1 to 2 hours. Serve hot.

1 orange, peeled and sliced
⅔ cup honey
¼ cup brandy
3 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves, or more to taste
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

Steps:

  • Combine red wine, orange slices, honey, brandy, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and ginger in a slow cooker.
  • Cook on Low until wine is steaming, 20 to 25 minutes.

Pour the wine, cider, and brandy into the pot, and stir in the honey or sugar. Slice one orange in rounds, and drop it into the pot.
  • Warm over low heat at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to come together, taking care not to allow the wine to boil lest you cook out the alcohol. Slice the remaining orange into thing wedges. Ladle the mulled wine into mugs, slip a slice of orange into the mug, and serve warm.
