This healthy berry crumble is the perfect way to enjoy summer's bounty! This refined sugar free crumble recipe is packed with fresh berries, apples for added texture, and topped with a deliciously crisp and oaty crumble topping. You'll love how simple this small-batch crumble is to make and that it comes together in less than an hour!

3 tbsp plain flour
3 tbsp rolled oats ((jumbo oats))
3 tbsp coconut sugar
½ tsp ground cinnamon
25 g melted unsalted butter
100 g baking apples, cubed ((see notes))
250 g fresh berries ((I used strawberries, blueberries + raspberries))
1 tsp arrowroot powder
2 tbsp unpasteurised honey
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tsp lemon juice

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF) and lightly grease a small 16 x 10 cm (6 x 4 inch) baking dish with oil or butter.
  • To make the crumble, whisk together the flour, oats, coconut sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl using a fork. Pour over the melted butter and toss with the fork until all the mixture is coated and resembles wet, clumpy sand. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, toss together the apples, berries, arrowroot powder, honey, vanilla, and lemon juice until well coated.
  • Scrape the fruit mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with the crumble mixture.
  • Place the dish on a baking tray and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until bubbly and golden and the apples are softened. At the 20-minute mark, check the crumble and cover loosely with a layer of foil if it looks too browned.
  • Remove the crumbles from the oven and allow them to rest for 5-10 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, yoghurt, or whipped cream.

In an effort to make a dessert that my parents could have on their no sugar, no flour diet, I came up with this. Thanks to Ladypit for the idea of using pineapple and banana for added sweetness. My recipe will make a lot of crumble topping because that's how my family likes it. You can adjust quantities as you see fit.

1 banana
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks in juice
1 (21 ounce) bag frozen mixed berries
3 apples, peeled and diced
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
3/4 cup ground almonds
1 cup chopped walnuts or 1 cup pecans
1 cup whole oats (not quick oats)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
salt (less if using salted butter)
1/2 cup melted butter
1/4-1/2 cup honey

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375.
  • Separated pineapple juice from chunks and in a food processor, puree the pineapple chunks and banana.
  • In a small sauce pan, reduce the pineapple juice to a syrupy consistency.
  • Combine the pureed fruit, pineapple syrup, frozen berries, apple, and applesauce in a large sauce pan and bring to a low boil.
  • Allow to cook until the apple are soft and the juices of the fruit have thickened.
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground almond, chopped nuts, oats, cinnamon, and salt, if using.
  • In a small sauce pan combine honey and butter and heat till well melted.
  • Pour butter and honey mixture into the dry ingredients a stir to combine.
  • Pour fruit mixture into a greased 9 x 13 casserole pan and top with crumble.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the fruit mixture is bubbling at the edges and the topping is golden brown.

  • Toss the fresh or frozen Berries, Maple Syrup, Lemon Juice, and Vanilla Extract together in a large bowl, then spread this mixture evenly across the bottom of your baking tin.
  • Next, add the Almond Butter, Maple Syrup, and Salt to the same bowl (no need to rinse) and mix until evenly combined. Add the Almond Flour, and Oats to the bowl, then fold into the wet mixture. Stir well until no dry clumps are left – the mixture should be pretty thick!
  • Use your hands to crumble the wet dough over the top of the berry mixture. It helps to have your hands slightly moist for this step!
