Steps:

  • Bring 2 cups fresh mint and 1 1/2 cups each sugar and water to a simmer in a saucepan, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove from the heat and let steep 1 hour; strain and chill. Combine 3 cups bourbon with 1 to 1 1/2 cups of the mint syrup. Divide among 6 glasses filled with crushed ice; garnish with mint sprigs.

MINT SYRUP:
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
2 cups loosely packed chopped fresh mint
EACH SERVING:
1/2 to 3/4 cup crushed ice
1/2 to 1 ounce bourbon
Mint sprig

Steps:

  • For syrup, combine the sugar, water and chopped mint in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook until sugar is dissolved, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat; cool to room temperature. , Line a mesh strainer with a double layer of cheesecloth or a coffee filter. Strain syrup; discard mint. Cover and refrigerate syrup for at least 2 hours or until chilled., For each serving, place ice in a metal julep cup or rocks glass. Pour 1/4 cup mint syrup and bourbon into the glass; stir until mixture is well chilled. Garnish with mint sprig.

  • Make mint syrup using 2 cups each sugar and water and 3 bunches mint (see recipe, below). Combine the syrup with 1 1/2 cups bourbon in a pitcher. Refrigerate up to 8 hours. Pour into julep cups packed with crushed ice. Garnish each with a mint sprig and serve with a straw.

2 fluid ounces Bourbon
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
1 fluid ounce club soda

Steps:

  • Place mint, sugar, and a few drops bourbon in a chilled silver cup or glass mug. Muddle leaves with sugar by pressing with a pestle or a wooden spoon until fragrant and sugar dissolves. Add ice and pour in remaining bourbon; stir to combine. Top off drink with club soda. Garnish with mint sprig and serve.

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Place the mint leaves and sugar or simple syrup into a julep cup, collins glass, or double old-fashioned glass.
  • Muddle well to dissolve the sugar and release the oil and aroma of the mint.

10 mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
1 1/2 teaspoons superfine sugar
Seltzer water
Crushed ice
2 1/2 ounces Kentucky bourbon whiskey

Steps:

  • Place the mint leaves in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass and top with the sugar. Muddle these together until the leaves begin to break down. Add a splash of seltzer water, fill the glass 3/4 full with crushed ice, and add the bourbon. Top with another splash of seltzer, stir, and garnish with a sprig of mint. Serve immediately.

A mint julep is the perfect respite on a hot day. Vivek and I have gone to the Steeplechase, the Nashville version of the Derby, where we fell in love with this quintessential Southern favorite. I add a dash of chile in the form of jalapeno in honor of all the awesome Southern belles I have met who pack a punch and have a dash of spice to their personalities.

10 fresh mint leaves plus 1 fresh mint sprig
2 ounces bourbon, such as Bulleit
1 ounce maple syrup
1/2 ounce store-bought jalapeno syrup, such as Fire Syrup
Splash of lemon-lime soda
2 to 3 slices jalapeno

Steps:

  • Muddle the mint leaves with the bourbon, maple syrup and jalapeno syrup in a tall pint glass or cocktail shaker.
  • Fill a mint julep glass with crushed ice. Top the glass or shaker with a cocktail strainer, then pour the bourbon mixture over the ice and top with the lemon-lime soda. Slap the mint sprig to release the oils and add it. Add the jalapeno slices directly to the ice and serve.

ice , cubes and crushed
a big mint sprig and a straw

Steps:

  • Shake the bourbon, mint leaves and sugar syrup with ice and strain into a highball glass or julep tin filled with crushed ice. Churn gently with a long-handled spoon and top with more crushed ice. Garnish and serve.

  • To highball glass or silver Julep cup, add minted simple syrup, then 1 cup crushed ice, bourbon, and splash of water. Add enough of remaining ice to almost fill glass. Stir well and garnish with mint sprig.
