  • Obtaining the Clay. Producing bricks requires good clay. Clay can be found in many areas, but some deposits of clay are better than others. Good clay doesn’t contain a lot of sediment, debris, or limestone.
  • Making the “Batter” The batter for making bricks consists of clay, water, and sand. Successful brickyards had a ready source for each of these ingredients.
  • Shaping the “Mud” into Bricks. When the three ingredients mentioned in step 2 were combined and well-mixed, they were in a putty form. This meant they could easily be shaped into bricks.
  • Drying the Raw Bricks. After a brick is formed, it still contains a lot of water. Therefore, the raw bricks had to be laid out to dry. However, laying them out to dry was a tricky process, because raw bricks can easily be disfigured, making them useless.
  • Firing the Bricks. The final step in the brick making process was “cooking” the bricks in a kiln. The bricks had to be cooked to a high enough temperature to be “cured.”

From ehow.com
  • Research the type of clays available in your area. Contact local clay supply stores and brick manufacturers to select the right materials. Calculate the amount of clay you will need at around 5 lbs per brick.
  • Make a mold to form your bricks using wooden planks and nails. Build a wooden box and leave the top (face) open for filling with clay. Make sure all edges are nailed tight to prevent the clay from leaking through.
  • Prepare your clay mixing station. Set up the table and the materials to be mixed beside the barrel or drum. Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Add water slowly until the mix has the consistency of dough.
  • Lubricate the mold with water and sand before filling with clay. Pack the clay into the mold and trim excess along the top edge with a stick. Let it set in the mold for about a half hour, then carefully flip it upside down to remove the wet brick onto a board and store for drying.
  • Dry the bricks by placing them on dry sand in the sun. Turn them as each side dries white in color. Don't assume the brick is completely dry, even when it has turned white.
