Plain White Bread image

A simple white bread for the bread machine. It makes glorious toast and great sandwiches. It's one of the few homemade breads my Wonderbread-addicted husband will eat. You can use half milk and half water, or even all water if you don't have the milk. This bread is best baked on the rapid cycle.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 1/2 cups milk
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups bread flour
2 teaspoons yeast

Steps:

  • Add all ingredients, in order, to bread machine.
  • Bake on quick (58 minute) cycle.

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 1/2 cups milk (lukewarm)
4 teaspoons active dry yeast
3 tablespoons white sugar
3 teaspoons salt
4 tablespoons butter or 4 tablespoons oil
6 cups all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Add yeast to warm milk and let sit for 5 minutes.
  • Add Salt Sugar and butter.
  • Sift in Flour.
  • Knead well and place somewhere warm for first rise with wet towel over top of the bowl (should double in size).
  • Knead and separate into two separate pieces.
  • Form into shape appropriate loaf pan.
  • Spray loaf pan and with your fist punch into loaf pan.
  • Set aside for second rise.
  • Bake at 350 for 20 - 25 minutes until crust is golden brown.
  • Remove from pan and allow to cool.

A delicious bread with a very light center with crunchy crust. You may substitute butter or vegetable oil for the lard if you wish.

2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
3 tablespoons white sugar
2 ½ cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
3 tablespoons lard, softened
1 tablespoon salt
6 ½ cups bread flour

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Stir in lard, salt and two cups of the flour. Stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  • Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  • Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal pieces and form into loaves. Place the loaves into two lightly greased 9x5 inch loaf pans. Cover the loaves with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in volume, about 40 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for about 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

1/2 cup butter
6 cups chunked bread, any kind
3/4 cup raisins
6 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups half-and-half
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Melt butter in an ovenproof dish (I use a 1 1/2 quart Corning dish).
  • Add raisins and bread pieces (can be cubed pieces or pieces pulled from loaves used in another recipe such as a bread bowl) to the butter and toss.
  • Beat together half and half, eggs, sugar and cinnamon.
  • Pour over bread mixture, making sure all bread crumbs are covered.
  • Bake in 325 degree oven for about 50 minutes (or until silver knife inserted in center comes out clean).

This no-yeast bread is made using any plain flour you have at home. It's slightly denser than a yeasted bread, but very satisfying spread with butter or dunked in hot soup

500g plain white flour or wholemeal flour, plus extra
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
½ tsp fine salt
1 tbsp sugar
350ml-400ml natural yogurt or buttermilk
handful of oats or seeds, optional

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and line a 900g loaf tin with baking parchment. Put a flat baking sheet in the oven to get really hot.
  • Mix the flour, bicarb, salt and sugar in a large bowl until evenly distributed. Make a well in the centre and tip in the yogurt. Bring together to make a slightly sticky dough.
  • Lightly dust the dough with extra flour and form into a fat log, around the same size as the tin. Put in the tin. Dip a wooden spoon in flour and make a line along the centre. Top with a small handful of oats or seeds, if you like.
  • Bake on the hot baking sheet for 40-45 mins or until golden brown. Leave to cool in the tin then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before cutting into slices.
