  • Determine the previous paint type. 2 /17. Before applying a fresh coat, find out if you’ll need to prime first by determining what kind of paint is currently on the door.
  • Purchase quality tools and materials. 3 /17. To get professional results you’ll need top-notch tools. Invest at least $10 on a quality 2- to 2½-inch sash brush to paint the door and trim.
  • Consider surprising colors. 4 /17. Traditionally, doors are done in the same shade as surrounding walls, but designers now are using interior doors to introduce unexpected accent colors that add impact to a room.
  • Choose the best finish. 5 /17. Fingerprints and grime are to be expected on interior doors in high-traffic areas. So pick paint with a gloss or semi-gloss finish, rather than flat or eggshell, for a surface that’s much easier to wipe clean.
  • Pick the perfect shade for trim. 6 /17. Here’s the rule of thumb designers use: If your door will be painted white or another light neutral, do the surrounding trim in the same color.
  • Detach correctly. 7 /17. While you certainly can protect the floor beneath and around the door and paint it in place, pros know that for smooth results you’d best invest the time to remove it from the frame.
  • Remove the doorknob. 8 /17. Paint splatters on a doorknob are the signs of a sloppy job. More importantly, the moisture in paint can adversely affect door hardware, potentially clogging the locking mechanism; sanding and cleaning agents can also damage hardware.
  • Fill holes and cracks. 9 /17. Painting a door—particularly an older wood one with trim and molding—generally requires some effort to prepare the surface.
  • Sand and prime. 10 /17. After any imperfections are filled, cured, and sanded, sand the entire door surface with 120-grit sandpaper, either manually or with a power sander.
  • Prop it on points for painting. 11 /17. Once the surface is sanded smooth, it’s time to paint. Rather than place the door directly on the work surface, elevate it by a few inches.

  • Remove Door. Tap out the pins in the door hinges. Place the sharp end of the nail at the bottom of the pin. Tap until enough of the pin protrudes for you to pull it out by hand.
  • Remove Hinges and All Items From Door. Place the door on two sawhorses. Remove the hinges from the door. Also remove the doorknob, rectangular faceplate, rose cover (the round trim), and any door hooks or wall protectors.
  • Sand Door. Lightly sand the door with the sanding sponge. Sand the front and back, as well as the two long edges and the top and bottom edges. Tip. For pre-primed doors, go easy with the sanding to avoid scuffing off the primer.
  • Paint Edges and Panels. With the brush, paint the edges of the door. If the door has panels, paint them, too. Load up the brush with a minimal amount of paint to avoid runs and sags.
  • Paint With Foam Roller. While the paint is still wet, switch to the foam roller. Roll paint on all of the flat surfaces. Along the way, touch up any drips from the brushwork.
  • Paint Other Side of Door. Wait at least two hours before turning the door over to paint the other side. Because pressure on the paint can cause indents, it's usually safest to wait a full day before turning it.
  • Replace Door and Hardware. Replace the hinges and all hardware. Slide the door back onto the hinges on the door frame. Replace the hinge pins.
