Homemade Pizza Sauce image

For years, I had trouble finding a pizza sauce recipe my family liked, so I started making my own. The evening I served it to company and they asked for my recipe, I knew I'd finally got it right! When I prepare my sauce, I usually fix enough for three to four pizzas and freeze it. Feel free to spice up the sauce to suit your own family's tastes. -Cheryl Kravik, Spanaway, Washington

Yield about 4 cups.

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce
1 can (12 ounces) tomato paste
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 to 2 teaspoons fennel seed, crushed
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine tomato sauce and paste. Add remaining ingredients; mix well. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Cool. , Pour into jars or freezer containers, leaving 1/2-in. headspace. Freeze up to 12 months. Thaw frozen sauce in refrigerator before serving.

I say replace sugar with carrots in any tomato recipe. Additional veggies are a sneaky way to get them into the kids. Add olive oil near end of cooking to preserve its flavor.

1 green bell pepper, coarsely chopped - or more to taste
¼ cup coarsely chopped carrot
6 cloves garlic, peeled
1 (29 ounce) can tomato puree
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 tablespoon dried Italian herb seasoning
1 teaspoon dried basil
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
3 tablespoons olive oil

Steps:

  • Place green bell pepper, carrot, and garlic cloves into a food processor and pulse a few times until the vegetables are very finely chopped.
  • Transfer chopped vegetables into a large saucepan. Stir in tomato puree, crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, basil, and red pepper flakes; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered until sauce has thickened, about 30 minutes. Stir in olive oil and simmer 1 to 2 more minutes. Sauce may be refrigerated up to 1 week.

A simple pizza sauce used by many pizzerias. The thickness of the sauce is regulated by the amount of water used; it should be somewhat viscous.

1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 ½ cups water
⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste
½ tablespoon dried oregano
½ tablespoon dried basil
½ teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed

Steps:

  • Mix together the tomato paste, water, and olive oil. Mix well. Add garlic, salt and pepper to taste, oregano, basil, and rosemary. Mix well and let stand several hours to let flavors blend. No cooking necessary, just spread on dough.
