12 frozen vol-au-vent cases
1 egg, beaten
200g (7 oz) Comté cheese, sliced in 1 cm (½ inch) cubes
100g (3½ oz) ham, sliced in 1 cm (½ inch) cubes

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 220°C (fan 200°C/425°F/gas 7).
  • Place the vol-au-vents on a baking tray.
  • Brush the outer rims with the egg.
  • In equal quantities place the ham and cheese cubes in little towers on all the cases.
  • Place the tray in the oven and bake for 13-15 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the pastry is golden brown.
  • Serve immediately.

1 (12 count) package Hawaiian sweet rolls
1 (6 ounce) package thinly sliced deli ham
¾ pound shredded Swiss cheese
½ cup unsalted butter
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons dried minced onion
¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a 9-inch square baking pan with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray.
  • Slice attached rolls in half widthwise with a serrated knife, keeping rolls connected, into a bottom and top 'slab.' Place bottom slab in the prepared pan.
  • Layer about half the ham evenly over the bottom slab of rolls. Layer Swiss cheese evenly on top, and arrange remaining ham over the cheese. Cover with the top slab.
  • Place butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in the microwave until melted, about 1 minute. Add mustard, poppy seeds, Worcestershire sauce, onion, salt, and pepper. Whisk to combine.
  • Pour butter mixture evenly and slowly over the rolls. Spread over the tops using a spatula; some of the mixture will pool at the base of the rolls. Cover with aluminum foil and let stand at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until cheese has melted, about 20 minutes. Uncover and continue baking until browned as desired, 3 to 5 minutes more. Slice into individual sliders.

2 teaspoons olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
3 sheets frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed
100 g sliced ham, finely chopped
1 1/2 cups finely grated cheese
4 eggs
3/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 200ºC. Lightly grease a 12 x 1/3-cup capacity muffin pan.
  • Heat oil in a small non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add onion. Cook for 3 minutes, or until soft. Set aside to cool.
  • Cut 4 x 10cm (diameter) circles from each sheet of pastry. Use to line muffin holes. Combine onion, ham and cheese. Divide between pastry shells.
  • Combine eggs and milk in a jug. Whisk with a fork. Pour over ham mixture.
  • Bake for 20 minutes, or until puffed and golden. Stand in pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool.

  • Roll the puff pastry to flatten any lines and then trim the edges so it's straight. Cut the pastry into six equal pieces by cutting a line down the center lengthwise and then three sections crosswise.
  • Lay the pastry pieces flat on a rimmed baking sheet, lined with parchment paper. Cut a 1/4 inch border around the edges, and then prick the pastries with a fork or knife several times.
  • Divide the mustard evenly across the 6 pieces of pastry. With the back of a small spoon spread it to cover the pastry inside the border. Then layer on 3 slices of Gruyere cheese, 2 slices of ham, and fan out 3 to 4 slices of apple across the top.
