GRANDMA'S SPLIT PEA SOUP

When you see Grandma cutting up little chunks of ham, you better get excited 'cause chances are she's getting ready to cook up some of her famous split pea soup! Grandma's Split Pea Soup is totally homemade and full of comfort.

4 cups water
4 cups beef broth
1 pound fully cooked boneless ham, cut into 1/2-inch chunks (see Note)
1 (24-ounce) package dry green split peas
2 onions, chopped
2 carrots, cut into chunks
2 ribs celery, cut into chunks
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • In a large soup pot over medium-high heat, combine all ingredients; bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 50 to 60 minutes, or until vegetables are tender.

Number Of Ingredients 18

1/2 pound dried whole peas
1/2 pound dried green split peas
1 meaty ham bone
3 quarts water
1 large onion, chopped
1 medium carrot, chopped
2 celery ribs, chopped
1/2 cup chopped celery leaves
1 teaspoon bouquet garni (mixed herbs)
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 pound smoked sausage, chopped, optional
SPAETZLE DUMPLINGS:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 large egg, beaten
1/3 cup water

Steps:

  • Cover peas with water and soak overnight. Drain, rinse and place in a Dutch oven. , Add ham bone, water and remaining soup ingredients except sausage and dumplings. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 2 to 2-1/2 hours. , Remove ham bone and skim fat. Remove meat from bone; dice. Add ham and, if desired, sausage to pan. , For dumplings, place flour in a small bowl. Make a depression in the center of the flour; add egg and water and stir until smooth. , Place a colander with 3/16-in.-diameter holes over simmering soup; transfer dough to the colander and press through with a wooden spoon. Cook, uncovered, 10-15 minutes. Discard bay leaf. Freeze Option: Prepare soup without dumplings and freeze in serving-size portions to enjoy for months to come.

1 lb split peas (yellow or green)
10 cups cold water
1/2 cup diced carrot
1/2 cup diced onion
1 lb ham bone (can substitute smoked ham hocks)
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a large soup pot.
  • Bring to a boil slowly.
  • Reduce heat and simmer until thick.
  • Remove bone, skin, and any fat.
  • Chop meat into bite-sized pieces.
  • Season to taste.

My family came from Southern Ill. In the winter it's very cold and snowey. My Grandma would warm the family up from the inside out, cooking hot soups like bean soups would keep you warm and full. Add a little southern cornbread and you have a great meal.

1 pound(s) navy beans or great northern beans
1 - ham bone with meat on it.
2 cup(s) diced celery
1 - onio chopped
2 cup(s) strained tomatoes
2 teaspoon(s) chopped parsley
1 cup(s) diced potatoes
- salt and peppet to taste

Steps:

  • Soak beans in a large pot with water to cover over night.
  • Drain beans and add with enough water to cover the beans, add salt and ham bone and cook until beans are almost tender.
  • Add the remaining ingredents and cook until ham is falling off the bone. Serve hot.

This was one of my Grandmas soups that was made in the 40's . The soup was easy to make but you had to make a stock before that to go with the soups and it took a long time to make about 5-6 hours. Now days we just use bought beef stock and use it in place of making your own.

1 quart(s) water
4 cup(s) green peas
1/4 cup(s) diced celery
1 - onion diced
1 - turnip diced
2 - sprigs of mint
1 tablespoon(s) flour
1 teaspoon(s) salt
1/8 teaspoon(s) pepper
1/2 teaspoon(s) sugar
( BROWN STOCK )
5 pound(s) beef bone
3 quart(s) water
8-10 - peppercorns
5 - cloves
1 - bay leave
2 - sprigs parsley
3 - sprigs thyme
1 tablespoon(s) salt
1 - stalk celery chopped
1/2 cup(s) diced carrots
2 - large onions sliced
1/2 cup(s) diced turnips

Steps:

  • ( BROWN STOCK ) Cut or trim meat from bones and brown meat. Put the meat and bones into a large kettle, or pot, cover with water and seasoning and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 4-5 hours. Add the vegetables and cook 1-2 hours longer. Strain and cool. When cool remove the layer of fat at the top. Use the broth fot soups, stews, and gravys.
  • Green Pea Soup.. combine brown stock, warer and 3 1/2 cups peas, celery, onions, turnips and mint. Cook until vegetables are tender.
  • Rub through a sieve, thin with stock or water if necessary.
  • Blend flour and seasoning with salt, pepper, and sugar. Add to puried vegetables and heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Add remaining whole peas, cook until tender, and serve.
