This sweet, sticky, juicy oven-baked BBQ chicken is the perfect easy weeknight recipe. Chicken drumsticks and thighs are surrounded by a simple 4-ingredient homemade BBQ sauce and baked to heavenly perfection.

3 1/4 lbs bone-in chicken pieces (drumsticks, thighs)
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup honey (or brown sugar)
6 large cloves garlic (minced)
1/4 cup soy sauce

Steps:

  • Remove chicken from fridge and let stand at room temperature while you mix the sauce. Preheat oven to 425ºF.
  • Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Measure all remaining ingredients directly onto baking sheet and stir to combine. Add chicken and turn to coat evenly, rubbing some sauce under the skin.
  • Bake in centre of oven for about 45 minutes, covering with foil about halfway through, until centre reaches 165ºF.

This is so easy and is typical of how Grandma Carr wrote her recipes. The BBQ Chicken just falls off the bones and makes a delicious simple supper.

1 cut up chicken or 3 lbs. chicken pieces
bottled bbq sauce
honey
1 sliced onion

Steps:

  • 1. Place chicken pieces in a lightly greased baking pan. Smother in barbecue sauce. Cover the bottom of the pan and both sides of chicken. Pour water on the bottom of the pan. Arrange onion slices in sauce on pan bottom around and under chicken. Put 2 tablespoons of honey on the top of each piece of chicken. Bake in 325 degree preheated oven for 1 hour. Remove and turn chicken. Add additional barbecue sauce and more water to cover bottom of pan again. Put back in oven for 1 more hour. Chicken will fall off the bone in tenderness.

6 chicken leg quarters
RUB:
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
SAUCE:
2 tablespoons butter
2/3 cup ketchup
1/2 cup honey
3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
2 teaspoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
Dash cayenne pepper, optional

Steps:

  • Pat chicken dry. Combine rub ingredients. Rub over chicken pieces; refrigerate, covered, in a shallow dish 2 hours., Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over medium heat, combine sauce ingredients, adding cayenne if desired. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, to allow flavors to blend, 8-10 minutes., On an oiled grill rack, grill chicken, covered, over indirect medium heat, turning frequently, until a thermometer reads 165°, 35-45 minutes., Reduce heat to medium-low. Brush chicken with sauce, reserving 1/2 cup. Cook, covered, until chicken pieces register 170°-175°, 4-6 minutes. Serve with reserved sauce.

4 whole skin-on, bone-in chicken breasts
1 cup barbecue sauce (such as Sweet Baby Ray's®)
kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking pan with heavy-duty foil to make cleanup easier.
  • Prepare chicken breasts by cutting off the rib meat if you wish and rinse and pat dry. Leave the skin on. Season chicken with salt and pepper and put in the pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until juices start to appear, about 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Remove the pan and generously pour 1/2 of the barbecue sauce over chicken. Continue to bake for 20 minutes. Repeat with remaining barbecue sauce and cook until no longer pink in the centers and skin is crispy, 15 to 20 minutes more.

1 (2 to 3 pound) whole chicken, cut into pieces
½ teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 egg yolk
1 ½ tablespoons honey
4 tablespoons margarine, melted

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  • Rub chicken pieces with garlic powder, salt and pepper. In a small bowl, beat egg yolk with honey and butter or margarine, then brush this mixture over chicken pieces. Place chicken pieces, skin side down, in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 45 to 60 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and juices run clear, basting with remaining butter or margarine. Just before serving, turn chicken over and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes to cook the skin on the other side.

1/2 cup honey
