"These gigantic molasses cookies remind me of the ones my grandmother used to make," remembers Joan Stull of Titusville, Florida. At nearly 4 inches across, they're nicely spiced, delightfully chewy and bound to be noticed!

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 cups butter-flavored shortening
4 cups sugar
1 cup molasses
4 eggs
8 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger
Additional sugar

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Beat in molasses and eggs. Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, cloves and ginger; gradually add to creamed mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 1-2 hours. , Shape 1/4 cupfuls of dough into balls; roll in sugar. Place four cookies on a greased baking sheet at a time. Bake at 350° for 18-20 minutes or until edges are set. Remove to wire racks to cool.

These are baked with a soft center and a slightly crispy crunch on the outside, and dipped in sugar to give it a sweet finish. Enjoy making memories with family and friends while devouring a batch of these soft molasses cookies during the holidays or bake them whenever you just need a batch of cozy and sweet spiced cookies regardless of the season.

1 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 1/4 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons granulated sugar

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 325°F. In large bowl, beat brown sugar, shortening, molasses and egg with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with spoon. Stir in remaining ingredients except granulated sugar.
  • Shape dough by rounded tablespoonfuls into 1 1/2-inch balls. Dip tops into granulated sugar. On ungreased cookie sheet, place balls, sugared sides up, about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake 13 to 16 minutes or just until set and cookies appear dry. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack.

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup dark molasses
1/2 cup water
4 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

Steps:

  • Beat 1 cup sugar and the butter in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with spoon. Stir in remaining ingredients except sugar. Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours until dough is firm.
  • Heat oven to 375°. Generously grease cookie sheet with shortening. Roll dough 1/4 inch thick on generously floured cloth-covered surface. Cut into 3-inch circles. Sprinkle with sugar. Place about 1 1/2 inches apart on cookie sheet.
  • Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until almost no indentation remains when touched lightly in center. Cool 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.

1 1/2 c butter softened
2 c sugar
2 medium eggs
1/2 c dark molasses
4 1/2 c all purpose flour
4 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp clove, ground
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 c pecans chopped
3/4 c sugar coarse

Steps:

  • 1. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • 2. Beat in eggs and molasses.
  • 3. Cimbine the flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, clove, and salt; gradully add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Fold in pecan.
  • 4. Shape into 2 inch balls and roll in coarse sugar.
  • 5. Place 2 1/2 in. apart on ungeased baking sheets. Bake for 16-18 minutes or until tops are cracked
  • 6. Remove to wire rack to cool. ENJOY !

¾ cup margarine, melted
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
¼ cup molasses
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon ground ginger
½ cup white sugar

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, mix together the melted margarine, 1 cup sugar, and egg until smooth. Stir in the molasses. Combine the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger; blend into the molasses mixture. Cover, and chill dough for 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Roll dough into walnut sized balls, and roll them in the remaining white sugar. Place cookies 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until tops are cracked. Cool on wire racks.
