Sometimes basic is better. At breakfast, that can certainly be the case. These easy oatmeal recipes teach you the basic methods so you get creamy, tender oats every time. The flavorings and toppings are up to you.

1 cup water or low-fat milk
Pinch of salt
½ cup quick-cooking oats (see Tip)
1 oz low-fat milk for serving
1 to 2 teaspoons honey, cane sugar or brown sugar for serving
Pinch of cinnamon

Steps:

  • Stovetop: Combine water (or milk) and salt in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil. Stir in oats and reduce heat to medium; cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat, cover and let stand for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Microwave: Combine water (or milk), salt and oats in a 2-cup microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on High for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Stir before serving.
  • Serve with your favorite toppings, such as milk, sweetener, cinnamon, dried fruits and nuts.

2 eggs
⅔ cup brown sugar
½ cup vegetable oil
½ cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup instant oatmeal
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 pinch salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Grease 12 muffin cups.
  • Whisk eggs, brown sugar, vegetable oil, and milk together in a bowl until smooth.
  • Stir flour, oatmeal, baking powder, baking soda, and salt into wet ingredients to form a batter. Fill the prepared muffin cups with batter.
  • Bake in preheated oven until tops are golden brown and an inserted toothpick comes out clean, about 20 minutes.

1/2 cup old fashioned oats
1 cup water or 1 cup milk
1 dash salt
2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon raisins or 1 tablespoon craisins

Steps:

  • Place oats and water ( or milk) in a microwave-safe bowl. Add dash salt and stir. Place in microwave on High for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. Stir. Add optional ingredients of your choosing and enjoy.

3/4 cup Crisco® All-Vegetable Shortening or 3/4 stick Crisco® All-Vegetable Shortening Sticks
1 1/4 cups firmly packed brown sugar
1 large egg
1/3 cup milk
1 1/2 tsps. vanilla extract
3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup Pillsbury BEST® All Purpose Flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • HEAT oven to 350 degrees F. Coat baking sheets lightly with no-stick cooking spray.
  • COMBINE shortening, brown sugar, egg, milk and vanilla in bowl of electric mixer; beat at medium speed until well blended.
  • COMBINE oats, flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Mix into shortening mixture at low speed just until blended. Stir in raisins and walnuts. Drop by rounded measuring tablespoonfuls of dough 2 inches apart onto prepared baking sheets.
  • BAKE 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool 2 minutes on baking sheets. Place on cooling racks to cool completely.

1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup water

2/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
Ice cream or whipped cream, if desired

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 375°F. Spray bottom and sides of 8-inch square pan with cooking spray.
  • Spread apples in pan. In small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle mixture over apples. Pour water over apples.
  • In medium bowl, mix flour, granulated sugar and softened butter, using pastry blender or fork, until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples.
  • Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender when pierced with fork. Cool 10 minutes before serving. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.
