Great appetizer. Family favorite for many years. Make them in a pan or a slow cooker. You can use uncut small smoky sausages, too.

DRUNKEN HOT DOGS

My mother used to make this and now it's a favorite for our family whether it's a football game, or get together. We have served it over hot rice or with toothpicks as an appetizer.

Categories     Meat Appetizers

Time 2h20m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 can(s) beer (room temp)
16 oz ketchup
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp dry mustard
1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 large onion (sliced)
1 medium green bell pepper (sliced & deseeded)
1 clove garlic
2 pkg farmer john beef franks

Steps:

  • 1. Slice all franks in half length-wise then into thirds or fourths (depending on what you consider bite size; one frank will give you 6-8 pieces) Side note on choice of frank: I have found that the Farmer John brand plumps up and absorbs the sauce better than other brand of franks we've tried.
  • 2. Add Beer, Ketchup, salt, dry mustard, and worcestershire to pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • 3. Add onion, bell pepper, garlic and franks. Continue to boil over medium low heat. Stir every 8-10 mins. Cook until onions and bell pepper have softened. Serve once cooled down a bit.
  • 4. I have also let this cook on low in the crock pot overnight. Just add all ingredients into the crock pot, stir and set to low. In the am, stir again and let it sit on warm until you need it!

3 lb turkey hot dogs cut in 1 inch sections
3 c ketchup
3 c brown sugar, lightly packed
1 1/2 c whiskey of your choice

Steps:

  • 1. Mix the ketchup & whiskey together. Add the brown sugar and when all mixed, stur in the hot dogs. Put the mixture in a high sided casserole dish suitable for serving.
  • 2. Bake at 375 degrees for 2 hours or until the top looks like it is bubbling, turn the temp down if necessary to avoid burning.Watch that the top doesn't start to burn because of the sugar. Stir every twenty minutes to distribute the heat. BE SURE TO PUT USE WOODEN SPOON TO SLIGHTLY PROP OPEN THE OVEN DOOR TO LET THE ALCOHOL ESCAPE IN THE COOKING PROCESS. They are done when the sauce is very thick and the meat looks fully saturated. Serve at once with plenty of tooth picks.
