7 PITFALLS OF NOT HAVING A MARKETING PLAN

From marketingvision.co.uk

  • A reactive approach to marketing. Taking a reactive rather than proactive approach to your marketing activities. You frequently find yourself on the back foot, reacting to marketing opportunities as they come along rather than taking a planned, controlled approach.
  • Missing out on great opportunities. Experiencing a multitude of missed opportunities and wrong turns. Missed journalist deadlines and costly advertising mistakes are just the tip of the iceberg with this pitfall.
  • Blowing your budget. Overspending versus budget. To generate sales you may panic and invest in an opportunity that you simply cannot afford, or perhaps you get carried away and spend your budget before the end of the year or a key selling period (or perhaps you don’t even have an agreed marketing budget!).
  • Creating poor sales materials. Unappealing sales communications that do not hit the mark with your target audience and or get the response you’d hoped for.
  • Achieving weak campaign results. Ineffective and disappointing marketing results due to sporadic and disjointed marketing activities. A well-planned, co-ordinated and timely campaign is an absolute must for success and positive return on your investment.

7 PROBLEMS WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE A MARKETING PLAN

From linkedin.com
  • Avoids a reactive approach to business opportunities. I have worked for business where the senior management would veer from one project to another based which was the most recent opportunity that was presented to them.
  • Keeps the marketing team connected to the rest of the business. The marketing team can often be the most disconnected from the rest of the business. They are not an operational department, largely because their work goes outside the business and doesn’t directly impact other departments.
  • Prevents parts of the business from pulling in the opposite directions. If the business as a whole doesn’t have a clearly stated plan for how the business is going to service customers’ needs profitably then individual teams will create versions of their own.
  • Improve campaign results. Without clear planning of what we are marketing and which customers with are targeting with what benefits our products will give the marketing communications team are often in the dark and often have only a vague idea of what company wants to achieve.
  • Poor quality product launches. It’s surprising how often that the marketing team is not included in the product launch teams at an early stage. I have certainly been asked to pull together launch communications only days before a new product was supposed to be launched.
