Time 1h10m

Yield 16 servings

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1 stick (8 tablespoons) salted butter
5 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Two 16-ounce cans refrigerated flaky jumbo biscuits (8 biscuits per can)
4 cups vegetable oil, for frying
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar, for sprinkling onto finished pies
1 cup Cinnamon-Caramel Sauce, recipe follows, or store-bought caramel sauce
1 cup packed light brown sugar
3/4 cup half-and-half
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) salted butter
2 pinches kosher salt
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add the brown sugar, butter and 1 tablespoon water. Cook, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is bubbling. Add the apples, vanilla, salt, cinnamon and lemon juice. Mix together the cornstarch and 1 tablespoon water in a small bowl to create a slurry. Add the cornstarch mixture to the skillet and stir to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender, about 5 minutes. Pour into a heatproof bowl and let cool completely. You can make this ahead of time and chill in the fridge a day or so in advance if needed.
  • To make the pies, roll each biscuit into about a 5-inch circle that is about 1/8 inch thick. Spoon 2 generous tablespoons of the apple filling on each round of dough, just off center. Use your finger and run a little water around the edges to help them seal completely. Fold one half of each circle over onto the other half and seal in the apple filling, forcing out any air that you can. Press the edges together and crimp with a fork. Continue until they're all assembled.
  • Heat the oil in a high-sided skillet over medium heat until it reaches 350 degrees F. Fry the pies 2 or 3 at a time for about 5 minutes, carefully turning them halfway through. Remove them to a paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain.
  • When all the pies are fried, sift the confectioners' sugar over top. Serve with Cinnamon-Caramel Sauce or store-bought caramel sauce.
  • Mix the brown sugar, half-and-half, butter and a pinch of salt in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook, whisking gently, until it thickens, 2 to 3 minutes. Whisk in the vanilla, cinnamon and a second pinch of salt and cook another minute to thicken further. Turn off the heat and allow to cool to room temperature before serving. Chill if not using immediately.

Provided by á-4939

Number Of Ingredients 16

apple filling:
3 apples (i.e. Granny Smith, Gala, Golden Delicious ) peeled, cored and cut into cubes
1/2 cup water
2-3 Tbs. brown sugar (depending on the apples you choose, you may need more or less brown sugar)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
pinch of salt
1 Tbs. cornstarch
2 Tbs. water
pie dough*:
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tsp. brown sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup vegan vegetable shortening
1/2 cup ice cold water
vegetable oil
cinnamon sugar (1-2 tsp. ground cinnamon plus 1/2 cup sugar), optional

Steps:

  • To make the apple filling: Combine apples, 1/2 cup water, sugar and cinnamon in a medium saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook until apples are slightly tender. Mix together the tapioca starch and water. Stir into the apple mixture until thickened. Remove from heat and allow to cool. To make the pie dough: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt. Using a pastry blender or a fork, cut the shortening into tiny pieces until the flour mixture resembles the texture of cornmeal. add a little bit of almond milk and stir gently with a fork If the mixture still appears dry and crumbly, add the remaining water, 1 teaspoon at a time for the smaller quantity of dough, a tablespoon at a time for the larger quantity, until the dough holds together easily. To assemble the pies: Roll the pie dough to about 1/8 inch thickness and cut circles of about 4-5 inches in diameter. You can use a cookie cutter or place a ramekin on top of the pie dough and cut around it using a paring knife. Scoop about a tablespoon of filling and place into the center of each circle. Fold over and seal by pressing a fork all around the edges. Refrigerate for about 10 minutes. To cook the pies: Heat oil in a skillet or deep fryer to 375 F degrees. (Tip: An easy way to test if the oil is hot enough is by dropping a small piece of dough into the oil. If the dough starts bubbling fast, then the oil is hot enough. If the bubbles are slow, the oil isn't hot enough) Fry each pie till golden brown around the edges. Use tongs to gently flip over gently and cook the other side for one minute. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar while it's hot. Serve immediately

APPLE PIE DEEP FRY

Apple Pie Deep Fry image

We adored these little fried apple pies. Using tortillas and canned pie filling makes this a super easy and tasty dessert. The cinnamon sugar coating is the perfect touch. The flavor pairs so well with the crispy outside and the warm apple filling. We tested with a dollop of whipped cream and it was so good. Next time, though,...

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 can(s) apple pie filling; 21 oz.
1 pkg flour tortillas, large are best
4-6 stick whatever you like to deep fry in - oil, lard, Crisco
1 pkg toothpicks
cinnamon sugar for rolling

Steps:

  • 1. Heat your oil in a pan or deep fryer (if you have one) enough to cover; make sure you use a deep frying pan or a pot so it does not boil over.
  • 2. While your oil is heating you can start on your apple rolls. I find warming the tortillas in the microwave is best. But not for too long they will get hard to roll.
  • 3. Place about a tablespoon of filling in or a little more.
  • 4. Fold sides in and roll. Use a toothpick to keep them closed. Deep fry until golden brown and filling should be warm. Drain on a paper towel.
  • 5. I roll mine in sugar and cinnamon. When I make cherry, I roll in powdered sugar. Make sure you remember TO TAKE OUT THE TOOTH PIC BEFORE YOU SERVE. Yummy! Top with some whipped cream. Enjoy these deep fried apple pie treats!
