CLASSIC FRENCH TOAST



Classic French Toast image

This Classic French Toast recipe uses simple pantry ingredients with a secret ingredient that makes a thicker batter with cinnamon sugar flavors that really set it apart!

4 large eggs
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
8 thick slices bread

Steps:

  • Preheat griddle to 350 degrees F or or heat a skillet over medium heat.
  • Add all ingredients, except the bread, to a blender or to a shallow dish and whisk well to combine. If whisking by hand, it's okay if the flour doesn't mix in completely smooth.
  • Dip bread slices into the batter, dredging them well on both sides, and place on hot, greased griddle or skillet.
  • Cook for a few minutes, until the bottom of the breads starts to get golden brown. Flip and cook on the other side the same.
  • Remove to a plate. Serve warm with syrup and a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

This is my dad & mom's french toast recipe. Mom contributed the vanilla and Dad contributed the cinnamon. =) This is best with a thick bread like challah or french bread, but sandwich bread will work too.

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons vanilla
5 slices bread

Steps:

  • Combine all of the ingredients except the bread and blend well.
  • Melt a pat of butter on the griddle for each slice of bread.
  • Soak the bread in the egg mixture.
  • Place a slice of soaked bread on top of a melted butter pat, and cook on low for 15 minutes.
  • While cooking, sprinkle each slice with more cinnamon if desired.
  • When almost done, place another pat of butter on top of each slice so it starts melting.
  • When done cooking, flip the toast over and brown on the other side.
  • Serve with hot maple syrup.

This isn't your typical French toast. But it is what I was raised on! I couldn't understand why resturaunts didn't serve real french toast when I was little. This one is a much thicker "coated" and just a different texture to it. Can be doubled. I hope your family enjoys it as much as ours does! Can be made with any kind of bread you like, white, whole wheat, I tried texas toast bread and that was pretty good also!

2 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon sugar
6 slices bread

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients together except for bread.
  • Once well mixed coat bread on both sides and drop onto a pre-heated griddle on medium heat.
  • Brown each side and serve with your favorite syrup!
  • I get about 6 slices of bread into mine, depending on size of bread used.

  • Cut your bread into 3/4-inch thick slices, to yield about 8 large or 12 medium slices of bread. If your bread is stale, move onto the next step. If your bread is fresh and soft, preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the sliced bread onto a large, rimmed baking sheet lined with an oven-safe cooling rack (if you have one) and bake for 8 minutes. If the bread still feels soft and squishy on the bottom sides, flip them and bake for an additional 4 to 8 minutes. We’re aiming for “stale bread” texture, not crispy toast. Set aside to cool.
  • Gently warm the milk in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stovetop, just until it’s warmer than room temperature (otherwise, the melted butter will clump on impact). Set aside.
  • Separate the yolks from three eggs, reserving the whites for another use if desired. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks until well blended. Add the warmed milk, melted butter, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon and salt, and whisk until blended. Pour the mixture into a 9 by 13-inch baking dish.
  • If you’re using an electric skillet, preheat it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit now. Place the sliced bread in the egg mixture, working with one side at a time. Once the bottom sides have absorbed egg mixture to a depth of about 1/4-inch, flip each slice and repeat for the other side. Transfer the soaked slices to your prepared baking sheet.
