BEER-BRAISED PULLED HAM



Beer-Braised Pulled Ham image

To jazz up ham, I slow-cooked it with a beer sauce. Buns loaded with ham, pickles and mustard are irresistible. -Ann Sheehy, Lawrence, Massachusetts

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 bottles (12 ounces each) beer or nonalcoholic beer
3/4 cup German or Dijon mustard, divided
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
1 fully cooked bone-in ham (about 4 pounds)
4 fresh rosemary sprigs
16 pretzel hamburger buns, split
Dill pickle slices, optional

Steps:

  • In a 5-qt. slow cooker, whisk together beer and 1/2 cup mustard. Stir in pepper. Add ham and rosemary. Cook, covered, on low until tender, 7-9 hours., Remove ham; cool slightly. Discard rosemary sprigs. Skim fat. When ham is cool enough to handle, shred meat with 2 forks. Discard bone. Return to slow cooker; heat through., Using tongs, place shredded ham on pretzel buns; top with remaining mustard and, if desired, dill pickle slices., Freeze option: Freeze cooled ham mixture in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Heat through in a covered saucepan, stirring gently; add water if necessary.

1 8-9lb ham with bone
1 lb 1lb box brown sugar
1 jar(s) 12 oz dijon mustard
1/4 c water
CROCKPOT PULLED HAM

Steps:

  • 1. Put Ham in crockpot with 1/4 cup of Water Cook on Low 9 or 10 Hours Until you can shred with fork
  • 2. Remove from pot & shred Place back in pot without bone
  • 3. Mix brown sugar & Dijon mustard pour over meat ,stir, cook on warm 15 min Serve in crockpot . Enjoy

This shredded pulled ham makes delicious sandwiches, and the leftovers make an excellent addition to casseroles, potatoes, and egg dishes.

1 picnic ham (bone-in, about 5 to 7 pounds)
1 1/2 cups cider vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 cup mustard sauce (below) (plain yellow mustard, mayonnaise, or a Grainy Mustard Dip, for the sandwich spread)
8 to 10 sandwich buns (toasted if desired)
South Carolina Mustard Sauce:
3/4 cup yellow mustard
2/3 cup cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon hot sauce (such as Frank's or Texas Pete)
2 to 3 tablespoons brown sugar (packed for taste)

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Put the ham in the slow cooker crockery insert.
  • Combine the vinegar, brown sugar, black pepper, and crushed red pepper; pour over the ham.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for about 9 hours, or until the ham is very tender. Or cook for about 4 to 5 hours on HIGH.
  • Discard excess fat and bones and the liquids. Shred or chop the ham.
  • Serve with split sandwich buns and your choice of condiments or spreads, along with coleslaw , beans, or your favorite sides and salads.
  • Enjoy.
  • Gather the ingredients.
  • In a saucepan, combine the 3/4 cup of mustard with the 2/3 cup of vinegar, the Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, 2 to 3 tablespoons of brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Blend well and bring to a simmer.
  • Simmer gently for about 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until reduced by about one-third.
