Cranberry and spices provide flavorful addition to wassail that is ready in 20 minutes. Perfect drink to serve for Christmas.

6 whole cloves
6 whole allspice
1 bottle (48 oz) cranberry juice cocktail (6 cups)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine
Orange slices, if desired
Cinnamon sticks, if desired

Steps:

  • Tie whole spices in 2 layers of cheesecloth or place in tea ball.
  • In large saucepan or Dutch oven, mix cranberry juice cocktail, brown sugar and nutmeg; add spices. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved. Reduce heat. Cover; simmer 10 minutes.
  • Stir in wine; cook until thoroughly heated. Remove spices. Serve wassail warm; garnish each glass with orange slice and cinnamon stick.

This cranberry wassail recipe with apple, citrus, warm spices, and tangy cranberry is the holidays in a cup! It's also healthy - non alcoholic & sugar free.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 quart apple juice
1 cup orange juice
1/4 cup lemon juice (fresh squeezed)
1 cup fresh cranberries
1 tbsp fresh ginger (grated)
2 sticks cinnamon
6 whole cloves
1 pinch nutmeg

Steps:

  • Add all ingredients into a large pot or crock pot. Heat gently.
  • Allow wassail to simmer for at least one hour for flavors to meld together. It can be simmered up to 4 hours.
  • Strain before serving.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated.

  • Combine juices in a nonreactive pot and stir in 1/2 cup sugar. Taste the mixture to determine if more sweetener is needed and adjust according to your taste. Heat just until steam begins to rise from the mixture.
  • Combine the spices, zest, and ginger in a piece of cheesecloth. Gather the edges and tie them together so the spices can't fall out.
  • Drop sachet bag into steaming cranberry juice mixture. Press the sachet down into the juices. Continue to heat wassail without boiling for 5-7 minutes. DO NOT BOIL. Cover pot with a lid and allow to steep for 20 minutes. Remove lid and sachet. Serve.
  • Wassail can be made in advance and refrigerated. Reheat and serve. Can be made at least 1 week in advance.
