This quick and easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce, made with lean ground beef and canned tomatoes has a rich and meaty sauce with a secret ingredient that is delicious, healthy and economical! It's also Weight Watchers friendly.

1.5 lb extra lean ground beef
1 Small onion
1 tbsp brown sugar
2/3 cup mushrooms, chopped
1/2 green pepper
1 -5 oz can tomato paste
2 -28 oz cans of canned tomatoes
3 cloves minced garlic (* add more or less to your liking)
1/4 cup Heinz chili sauce
1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp fresh, chopped basil (* can substitute 1 tsp dried basil)
2 tbsp fresh, chopped oregano (* can substitute 2 tsp dried oregano)
1/2 tbsp fresh, chopped cilantro (* can substitute 1 tsp dried cilantro)
2 tsp fresh, chopped rosemary (* can substitute 1/2 tsp dried rosemary)
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 -340 g -box spaghetti noodles (*(1/2 of a 12 oz box))

Steps:

  • Cook ground beef and onions together until ground beef is browned
  • Meanwhile, mix tomatoes, tomato paste, green peppers, mushrooms, garlic, chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, herbs and spices together in a large pot and cook over medium heat on stovetop.
  • When ground beef/onion mixture is browned, drain thoroughly and add to tomato mixture.
  • Simmer for approximately 20 minutes or until vegetables are soft.
  • While sauce is cooking, cook spaghetti as per package directions. Drain and serve with desired amount of sauce on top.

This spaghetti sauce is 'secret' because it has loads of onions and carrots 'hidden' in it. My husband and kids love it - I quadruple the recipe every time and freeze the extra in zip-lock bags.

½ pound ground beef
½ pound Italian sausage
4 carrots, quartered
1 large onion, quartered
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 (30 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 (30 ounce) can tomato sauce
2 tablespoons dried oregano
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
salt to taste

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef and Italian sausage in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 10 minutes; drain and discard grease.
  • Chop carrots and onion in the food processor.
  • Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat; cook and stir carrots, onion, and garlic in the hot oil until onion is transparent, about 5 minutes. Stir ground beef-sausage mixture, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, brown sugar, basil, black pepper, and cinnamon into onion mixture; simmer, stirring occasionally, until flavors have blended, about 30 minutes. Season with salt.

1 package of Italian sausage.
1 package of ground beef
1 Medium Onion chopped
3 Garlic Cloves (crushed)
2 28 oz Cans Diced Tomatoes
1 6 oz Can Tomato Paste
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
1/4 Cup Red Wine
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Pepper
1 teaspoon Oregano
2 Tablespoons Italian Seasoning
2 Tablespoons Sugar
1 teaspoon FENNEL SEEDS!!

Steps:

  • Sauté meat, onions, and garlic in a large sauce pan over medium heat until meat is browned.
  • Add all other ingredients to the sauce pan. Mix Together.
  • Bring the sauce to a bubble and let simmer for a couple hours, stir periodically.

From an old Junior League of Toronto Cookbook. I use this to make lasagna as well. Just increase sweet & sour sauce to 1/2 cup.

3 tablespoons olive oil
500 g lean ground beef
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 large onion, finely chopped
1/2 green peppers or 1/2 red pepper, finely chopped
1 (796 ml) can tomato sauce
1 (156 ml) can tomato paste
1 (284 ml) can sliced mushrooms, drained
1/3 cup sweet and sour sauce (preferred brand VH)
2 bay leaves
2 teaspoons oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper

Steps:

  • Heat olive oil in a large fry pan. Add meat, garlic, onion and green pepper. Cook until meat is browned and onions translucent. Drain excess fat.
  • Transfer mixture to a large pot. Add all other ingredients.
  • Lower heat, cover pot and simmer 1 hour. (I give it only 1/2 hour if I'm rushed).
  • Remove cover, or keep partially covered for another 30 minutes, until sauce reaches desired consistency. Should it become too thick, add some water or dry red wine.
  • Remove bay leaves and pour sauce over cooked spaghetti.
