This is my first attempt at making a pake. You can use any kind of pie or cake.

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 8-inch cherry pie (store bought)
1 box devil's food cake mix
water, oil, and eggs called for in cake
frosting or cool whip - optional

Steps:

  • 1. Mix cake batter according to instructions. Pour about 1 and 1/3 cup of batter in the cake pan. Carefully de-tin the baked pie and place it face up on top of the batter in the cake pan. Push down lightly to release any trapped air. Pour enough batter on top to cover the pie. Bake according to box instructions. Cool and remove from pans the frost it.

1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
1 (15 ounce) can crushed pineapple in juice
1 (18 1/4 ounce) package butter recipe cake mix or 1 (18 1/4 ounce) package yellow cake mix
2 1/2 cups flaked coconut
1 cup pecan pieces or 1 cup walnut pieces
1 cup butter, melted

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325.
  • Do NOT stir at any time.
  • Pour cherry pie filling into 9 x 13 pan.
  • Spread pineapple with juice over cherry filling.
  • Do not stir.
  • Sprinkle cake mix over pineapple.
  • Sprinkle coconut over cake mix.
  • Sprinkle nuts over coconut.
  • Pour melted butter over all.
  • Bake 40 minutes or until top is golden brown.

1 (18 1/4 ounce) package white cake mix
3 egg whites (or as called for by your cake mix)
1/3 cup oil (or as called for by your cake mix)
1 1/3 cups water (or as called for by your cake mix)
1 (3 ounce) package fruit flavored gelatin powder
1 cup boiling water
1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
1 (16 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

Steps:

  • Prepare and bake cake mix according to package directions for one 9x13 inch cake.
  • Remove cake from oven.
  • Poke holes at once down through cake with a fork.
  • Holes should be at 1 inch intervals.
  • While the cake cools, combine the gelatin with boiling water.
  • Pour gelatin mixture over the cake.
  • Top with the cherry pie filling, then cover with whipped topping.
  • Refrigerate cake for one hour before serving.

I got this recipe in 1973 from a friend at college. It is so easy and absolutely delicious. It could be made from fresh or frozen sour cherries, but I've always used canned cherries. I just drain the juice and save it for another use (cherry martini anyone?).

1/4 lb butter (I use Earth Balance to make it Vegan)
2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans sour cherries
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups milk (I use soy milk or almond milk to make it Vegan)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 F; place baking pan in oven to preheat as well (9 x 15" or 11" round).
  • Open cans of cherries; drain juice. Save juice for another use. Place cherries in a bowl and stir in 1/2 cup sugar. Set aside.
  • Melt the butter by placing it in the hot baking pan. While butter is melting, make the batter.
  • Make batter by mixing dry ingredients (1 cup sugar, salt, baking powder and flour). Stir in the milk; beat well to eliminate lumps.
  • Remove pan containing melted butter from oven; pour the batter into the pan over the melted butter. Don't stir.
  • Spoon in the sugared cherries but don't stir. Just drop them around on top of the batter.
  • Put in oven and bake for 60-70 minutes or until top is golden brown. The cherries will sink into the batter; the batter will rise to the top and form a beautifully golden crust.
  • Let cool. Serve warm or cool either alone or topped with whipped cream or ice cream.

1 store bought frozen pie crust
1 (18 1/2 ounce) box cake mix (we recommend Red Velvet)
1 (8 ounce) container frosting (we recommend Cream Cheese)
egg (as needed on cake box)
vegetable oil (as needed on cake box)
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • -Leave the frozen pie crust out to thaw while you are mixing the cake batter.
  • -Prepare the cake batter per the instructions on the box.*Note: This will make enough filling for two Pakes.
  • -Gently poke a few small holes in the bottom of the pie crust, being careful not to poke through the tin.
  • -Pour half of the cake batter into the pie crust, until approximately 1/2" below the edge. *Note: the cake mix will raise above the edge of the pie crust during baking.
  • -Mix in chocolate chips if desired.
  • -Place the Pake on a cookie sheet and place in the oven on a middle rack.
  • -Bake for approximately 35 minutes at 350°F After 35 minutes, turn oven down to 325°F and continue baking for another 12-15 minutes or until cake is finished. (You can test the cake by sticking a toothpick in the center and pulling it out. It should be relatively clean with very little cake crumbs stuck to it.).
  • -Let the pake cool completely.
  • -If desired, cut the top section of the cake off and place a layer of frosting (or filling of your choice) on the lower half of the cake. Replace the top section.
  • -Scoop the remaining frosting onto the cake and frost to the edge of the pie crust.
  • -Garnish with dollops of whipped cream around the edges, sprinkles, candy pieces or a cherry (as desired).

  • Cook the Pie. First you need to cook the pie. Mine said to put frozen pie on a cookie sheet and bake for 1 hour. You could buy an already baked pie, or make one from scratch, but this pie was on sale.
  • Assemble and Bake the Pake. Pour a little batter into your greased cake pan. Enough to cover the bottom of the pan about 1/4" deep. I am using a 9" cake pan.
  • Cool and Frost. When the pake is done, take it out and test it. The top should spring back a little when you touch it. Let it cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes.
  • Enjoy! Now for the best part. Serve it up. You can tell your friends what it is, or let the filling be a tasty suprise. It is very very yummy. Similiar to black forest cake, but with a yummy buttery pie crust inside.
