This bread is commonly used for an Indian Taco (a tasty twist on taco night). Set up a taco bar and everyone can make their own. We also loved it with honey drizzled on top. The idea for using...

  • 2. Add the water to the flour mixture.

  • 5. If you have a 4" cutter, roll the dough out on a lightly floured board until 1/4" thick and cut out 4" rounds. If you don't have a big cutter, pinch off about a golf ball size of dough.
  • 6. Roll or pat dough flat in a circle about 1/4 of an inch thick.
  • 7. Drop dough into heated oil that is 1-2 inches deep (about 317 degrees). Fry until the bread puffs up.
  • 8. Flip over. It is done when both sides are golden brown.
  • 9. Drain on paper towels.
  • 10. Serve with honey.
  • 11. Or can use bread for tacos. Brown 1 lb ground turkey, add 1 chopped red bell pepper and a can of yellow corn to browned turkey. Add 1 package of taco seasoning and a touch of ketchup to taste. Serve on fry bread with lettuce, cheese, refried beans, tomatoes, etc.

NATIVE AMERICAN FRY BREAD

Native American Fry Bread image

This classic Native American fry bread is deep-fried to puffed-up perfection. Serve this delicious bread with a meal or make fry bread tacos.

Provided by Diana Rattray

Categories     Side Dish     Bread

Time 16m

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 cups vegetable oil (or enough for 1-inch depth, for frying; or shortening)
1 cup all-purpose flour , plus more for dusting
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • In a deep, 10-inch cast-iron skillet or heavy saucepan, heat about 1 inch of oil to 350 F. If you don't have a deep-fry thermometer to attach to the pan, dip the handle end of a wooden spoon in the oil. The oil should bubble around it fairly steadily when it's ready. The popcorn method is another option: Place a kernel of popcorn in the oil, and it will pop when the oil reaches 350 to 360 F.
  • Meanwhile, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Mix well to blend.
  • Add the milk and stir until the dough holds together.
  • Knead 3 or 4 times on a floured surface.
  • Divide the dough into 4 uniform pieces and shape each into a ball.
  • Using a lightly floured rolling pin, roll each ball of dough into a circle that's about 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick. Make a depression in the center of each round of dough (it will puff up while frying).
  • Carefully slide 1 or 2 pieces of dough into the hot oil. Fry for about 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until lightly browned.
  • Remove the fried dough to paper towels to drain.

INDIAN FRY BREAD (THE PIONEER WOMEN) RECIPE - (4.1/5)

Indian Fry Bread (The Pioneer Women) Recipe - (4.1/5) image

Provided by rdhch

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
3 tsp baking powder (slightly rounded teaspoons0
3/4 cup milk
water as needed to get dough to come together
Crisco for frying

Steps:

  • Stir together flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Stir with fork as you pour in the milk, keep stirring for a bit to get it to come together as much as possible. Add enough water (about 1/4 to 1/2 cup) to get it to come together. Cover the bowl with a dish towel and let it sit for 45 minutes to rest. When ready to make the fry bread, heat about 1" to 2" Crisco in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Grab a plum-sized piece of dough and press it into a circle with your fingers; place it on a clean surface and begin pressing in the center and work your way out, stretching as you go. When the circle is 4" to 7", carefully drape it in the skillet. Allow it to fry on one side until golden brown, about 1 minute, then carefully flip it to the other side using tongs. Fry it for another 30 to 45 seconds. Remove fry bread to paper towel-lined plate and allow to drain while the other bread is fried. Serve warm!
