CLASSIC WHISKEY SOUR



Classic Whiskey Sour image

The most famous of sour cocktails: the whiskey sour! It's perfectly balanced with bourbon, lemon and sweetener. Garnish with an orange peel and a cocktail cherry.

2 ounces (4 tablespoons) bourbon whiskey*
1 ounce (2 tablespoons) fresh lemon juice
3/4 ounce (1 1/2 tablespoons) pure maple syrup (or simple syrup)
Garnish: Orange peel and a cocktail cherry
Ice, for serving
Variation: Add an egg white for a Boston Sour

Steps:

  • Add the bourbon whiskey, lemon juice, and syrup to a cocktail shaker. Fill with a handful of ice and shake until very cold.
  • Strain the drink into a lowball or Old Fashioned glass. Serve with ice, an orange peel and a cocktail cherry.

EGGNOG

2/3 cup sugar
5 large eggs, separated
2 cups 2 percent milk
Pinch ground cinnamon
2 pods star anise
2 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
1 cup heavy cream
2/3 cup bourbon
Whipped cream, for serving
Whole nutmeg, for grating

Steps:

  • In a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the sugar and egg yolks. Whip on high speed until they are pale in color, about 6 minutes.
  • Heat the milk along with the ground cinnamon, anise, cloves, cinnamon stick and vanilla seeds in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring, until it comes to a simmer, then turn off the heat.
  • Pour half the mixture (avoid adding spices) into the egg yolks and whisk by hand to combine. Combine the egg yolk mixture with the remaining milk and return to the stove.
  • Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring, until it almost reaches a simmer. Stir in the heavy cream and bourbon. Turn off the heat and let cool completely.
  • When ready to serve, whip the egg whites to medium stiff peaks. Stir into the cooled mixture. Divide among glasses and garnish with the whipped cream and grated nutmeg.

1 cup whipped cream
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped pistachios
1/2 pint pistachio ice cream
1/2 pint vanilla frozen yogurt
Store-bought baklava, cut into large pieces
Honey, for drizzling

Steps:

  • Gently fold together the whipped cream and cinnamon in a bowl. Set aside.
  • Place 1 tablespoon pistachios in the bottom of each of 4 sundae bowls. Top with 1 scoop pistachio ice cream and 1 scoop frozen yogurt, then add a few pieces of baklava, a dollop of the cinnamon whipped cream, a drizzle of honey and more pistachios.

Fresh Whiskey Sours image

3/4 cup Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (3 lemons)
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (4 limes)
2/3 cup sugar syrup (see below)
Maraschino cherries

Steps:

  • Combine the whiskey, lemon juice, lime juice and syrup. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice and fill two-thirds full with the cocktail mixture. Shake for 30 seconds and pour into glasses. Add a maraschino cherry and serve ice cold.
  • Sugar syrup: Put 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Chill thoroughly before using.

All-American Whiskey Sour image

1 1/2 ounces Maker's Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky
3 1/2 ounces fresh Sweet and Sour Mix, recipe follows.
3 1/2 ounces freshly squeezed orange juice
1-quart water
1-quart fresh lime juice (lemon juice can be substituted to taste)
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 egg white (optional, gives a great frothiness to any shaken drink)

Steps:

  • Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for five seconds. Strain into a highball glass over fresh ice. Garnish with an orange and cherry "flag".
  • Stir ingredients together until sugar is fully dissolved.
