Black vodka provides the spooky color in this grown-up twist on a Shirley Temple, and black-cherry soda gives this drink its classic sweet flavor. Top it off with what else but a maraschino cherry garnish.

18 ounces black vodka
3 ounces fresh lime juice (from 3 limes)
Ice cubes
36 ounces sparkling black-cherry soda (preferably Boylan)
6 maraschino cherries, for garnish

Steps:

  • Stir together vodka and lime juice. Fill six 8-ounce glasses with ice cubes, and divide vodka mixture among them. Top with soda, and garnish with cherries.

3 cups bing cherries, pitted and halved
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1/4-1/2 cup sugar or 1/4-1/2 cup Splenda sugar substitute
1/3 cup flour
1 cup flour
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4-1/3 cup buttermilk
sugar, for sprinkling top

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  • In mixing bowl, combine cherries, flour and sugar; toss to coat evenly.
  • Place in 8" square pan and bake for 25-30 minutes until bubbly.
  • Meanwhile, sift flour into bowl; add baking powder, soda, and salt; and cut in chilled butter with pastry blender or 2 knives. When pea-sized texture, add buttermilk -all at once- stir just to blend.
  • DO NOT OVERMIX; dough will be tough.
  • When cherries are finished baking, remove from oven, drop dough by large spoonsful over cherries, and sprinkle lightly with granulated sugar.
  • Return to oven for 25-30 minutes or until topping is done and golden brown.
  • Serve hot or cool with whipped cream.

2/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 cups frozen pitted tart cherries, thawed
2 cups frozen unsweetened blackberries, thawed
TOPPING:
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 cups sugar
Dash salt
2/3 cup cold butter
1-1/2 cups finely chopped walnuts
Whipped cream

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the brown sugar, tapioca, extract and cinnamon. Gently stir in cherries and blackberries. Allow to stand for 10 minutes. Pour into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish., In another bowl, combine the flour, sugar and salt. Cut in butter until crumbly. Add walnuts; sprinkle over fruit. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 55-60 minutes or until topping is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Serve warm with whipped cream.
