This cookie recipe has been handed down to me from my grandmother. It has been in the family for at least four generations.

Number Of Ingredients 6

½ cup butter, softened
½ cup white sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Mix in the egg and vanilla. Combine the flour and baking powder; stir into the creamed mixture until blended. Divide dough into walnut sized portions. Roll each piece into a rope and then shape into a loop. Place cookies 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until firm and golden at the edges.

Dough
5-1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
3 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
2 sticks melted unsalted butter
1 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs
Frosting
1-1/2 cups confectioners sugar
1 tsp sour cream
2 teaspoons vanilla
Water if needed to make a thin, spreadable frosting.

Steps:

  • Sift flour and combine with the remaining dry ingredients and set aside. Cream butter and sugar and add sour cream and lemon juice and mix until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and beat until combined. Gently add the dry ingredients. Using a food scale, create 5 even dough balls and refrigerate for 1 hour. After filling, bake at 400 degrees until lightly golden around the edges.

2-1/2 cups butter, softened
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs, room temperature
1/4 cup 2% milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
7-1/2 to 8 cups (30 to 32 oz.) all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Beat in eggs, milk and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk 7-1/2 cups flour, baking powder and salt; gradually beat into creamed mixture, adding more flour if necessary. Divide dough into four 2-cup portions. Refrigerate, covered, until needed., Basic Cookie Dough may be used to prepare the following recipes: Crumb-Topped Date Bars, Cherry Surprise Cookies, Chocolate Mallow Cookies or Jelly Sandwich Cookies.
