Anyone who likes dates will enjoy this rich date dessert. The recipe, which came out of my mother's cookbook, is our favorite dessert for Thanksgiving, Christmas...even New Year's gatherings.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar, divided
3 tablespoons butter, divided
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup milk
2 cups water
Whipped cream or ice cream

Steps:

  • In a bowl, cream 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 tablespoon butter. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon; add dates and nuts. Add flour mixture alternately with milk to creamed mixture; set aside. , In a saucepan, combine water with remaining brown sugar and butter. Bring to a boil; boil 5 minutes. Pour into a 9-in. round baking pan. Spoon batter on top of sauce. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream or ice cream.

1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar, divided
1 cup water
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup milk
1 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
whipped cream

Steps:

  • In a saucepan combine 1 cup brown sugar, water, and bring to a boil, cook for 3 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and add butter.
  • In a bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt, 1/2 cup sugar.
  • Stir in milk until smooth.
  • Add dates and walnuts.
  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Pour syrup into a 8 or 9-inch baking pan; add batter and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream.

3/4 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
6 tablespoons sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Dash salt
1 tablespoon butter
Whipped cream

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine the dates, walnuts and sugar. In another bowl, beat egg, milk and vanilla. Add to date mixture; mix well. Combine flour, baking powder and salt; add to the date mixture. , Spread into a greased 1-qt. baking dish; dot with butter. Bake at 325° for 30 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve with whipped cream.

2 c brown sugar, firmly packed
2 c boiling water
1 c white sugar
1 3/4 c all purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 c dates, chopped
1 c chopped nuts
1 c milk

Steps:

  • 1. Dissolve brown sugar in boiling water. Pour into 13x9 pan. Then mix remaining ingredients in a large bowl. drop mixed ingredients by teaspoonfuls into brown sugar and water mixture in cake pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. serve warm with ice cream.

1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

  • Preheat oven to 350°; In a bowl, combine the flour, 1 cup brown sugar, baking powder and salt. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter; combine with milk. Stir into flour mixture until smooth. Fold in dates and walnuts. Transfer to a greased 8-in. square baking dish., In a large saucepan, bring remaining 1 cup brown sugar and water to a boil. Cook and stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat; stir in remaining 1 tablespoon butter until melted. Pour over batter., Bake until a toothpick inserted near the center of cake comes out clean, 50-60 minutes. Serve warm. If desired, top with whipped cream.

1 cup boiling water
1 cup dates, chopped
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons butter or 2 tablespoons margarine, softened
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter or 1 tablespoon margarine, melted
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 cup chopped nuts

Steps:

  • Pour boiling water over dates and set aside to cool.
  • Cream together sugars, egg and butter or margarine.
  • Combine dry ingredients and blend into creamed batter.
  • Stir in dates and nuts.
  • Pour into a greased baking pan, 11"X 7"X 1 1/2".
  • Top with sauce and bake at 350 degrees F for 40 to 45 minutes.
  • Serve warm or cold, topped with whipped cream, if desired.
  • Sauce: Mix together until smooth and syrupy.
  • Pour over batter and bake.
