Here's what you need: corn tortillas, olive oil, McCormick® Tangy Spice Blend, kosher salt

12 corn tortillas, 4 inch (10 cm) wide
¼ cup olive oil
2 tablespoons McCormick® Tangy Spice Blend, divided
2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided, plus more to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350˚F (180°C). Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Lightly brush the tortillas all over with olive oil. Sprinkle ¼ teaspoon of tangy spice blend evenly over each tortilla and season lightly with salt. Flip and repeat on the other sides.
  • Stack 4 tortillas on top of one another and cut into 6 equal triangles. Repeat with the remaining tortillas.
  • Spread the tortilla triangles in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets.
  • Bake the tortillas for 20-25 minutes, rotating halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oven and let cool. The chips will continue to crisp as they cool.
  • Enjoy!

6 whole wheat tortillas (white flour okay!)
vegetables, spray (I used a mister)
cinnamon (optional)
taco seasoning, etc. (optional)

Steps:

  • Use animal-shaped cookie cutters (or other shapes of your choice) to cut shapes from the tortillas.
  • PREHEAT oven to 350º.
  • Arrange the animals on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Lightly coat them with cooking spray and if you want, sprinkle with cinnamon or other salt free seasoning of your choice.
  • Bake for approximately 7 minutes or until crispy and slightly browned.
  • Suggestion: Take your chips for a dip in salsa or guacamole.
  • Yield is estimated.

I am *not* a cake baking expert. What I wanted: (1) to bake a cake for --Tasty's-- birthday, (2) butterfly shaped and (3) something festive, kid-pleasing and easy. Family Fun website to the rescue! Happy Birthday, --Tasty Dish-- and this marks my 1,000th recipe posted on the site. I predict this recipe will somehow make its way to cakewrecks.com...

1 baked 8-or-9-inch round cake (*yellow, white, chocolate, etc.)
2 cups frosting, your choice (original recipe used chocolate frosting)
1 cup yellow frosting
1 Hostess Twinkie
jelly fruit slices
assorted candy (gumdrops, jelly beans, mini chocolate chips, etc.)
red string licorice (for antennae) or black string licorice (for antennae)

Steps:

  • *Note: I must confess that I cheated and used a box of 'Baker Josef's Golden Yellow Cake Mix' from Trader Joe's. Sincere apologies to my loyal fans who depend on me for made-from-scratch recipes. Also, it's worth mentioning I made two cakes-one using a standard 9" pie pan and the other using a 9" cast iron skillet. The cake baked in the cast iron skillet turned out far better. To remove the cake from the pan *after it has cooled completely*, first take a knife and run along the edge of the pan to loosen. Place a wire cookie rack over the top of the pan, invert carefully and set aside. I used two spatulas and carefully moved the cake from the wire rack to the cake serving plate to frost it. This method worked best for this inexperienced cake baker. Two cakes were made in case of any mistakes. The second cake was cut in half then in half again and made into "baby butterflies".
  • Other candy decorating suggestions: M&Ms (regular or mini size), gummy candy, non pareils, sprinkles, etc.
  • Once cake has baked and cooled *completely*, cut the cake in half (see photo) and place the two halves close together with the flat/straight cut side facing out and curved sides facing each other (leave about a 3/4" gap between the two halves).
  • Frost. For my test cake: The main body/wings and Twinikie were frosted yellow, the inner body pink. I made a pattern out of a piece of paper for the inner wing design. Placed the piece on paper on the cake halves and using a toothpick made small holes around the edge of the pattern as my guide. Then I carefully drew the line with the toothpick. Remove paper and frosted the main section first then the inner wing. (See photo.).
  • Frost the Twinkie and place it on top of the two cut cake halves between the wings for the butterfly's body.
  • *Decorate the wings with candies and adding licorice antennae to the Twinkie. (I just curled the ends of the licorice and placed the pieces on the plate.).
  • *Tip: it's best to decorate the cake right before serving [depending] on the candies you choose. As an example, if you use M&M candies, the dye will run and stain the frosting. Fortunately I was able to frost the cake the day before and due to the type of candies used had no staining problems.

1 large pink grapefruit or 1 large navel orange
2 red seedless grapes
1 -2 cup green seedless grape (2 small clusters)
2 fresh cherries (keep stem intact) or 2 maraschino cherries (keep stem intact)
1 slice apple (or kiwi, papaya, mango, etc.)

Steps:

  • Cut the grapefruit in half. Then cut off a small slice on the bottom near the stem to make the grapefruit lie flat on a plate.
  • Eyes: Cut both grapes in half and place on the grapefruit.
  • Nose: Add the cherry between the two grape halves.
  • Mouth: Place the apple slice (or other fruit of choice) underneath the cherry where the mouth would be.
  • Hair: Place the grape cluster on the top of the grapefruit where the hair would be.
  • Eat! Yummy!

12 turkish dried apricots (use organic and unsulphured apricots for quality and best flavor)
12 small pretzels (plus a few more in case any break)
1 tablespoon cream cheese (approximately)
12 mini chocolate chips (plus a few extra) or 12 currants (plus a few extra)

Steps:

  • Fish body: With an adult's help, make a slit on one end of each dried apricot. Note: I very lightly mashed the dried apricot before making the slit although this is optional.
  • *Carefully* insert the bottom of a mini pretzel. Again, carefully pinch the apricot around the pretzel to hold it in place. It may require a few takes to get the hang of it.
  • To make the fish eyes: pipe on a small dot of cream cheese (a plastic sandwich bag with a very [small corner] snipped off works well for this) and then press a mini chocolate chip or currant, tip down, into the cream cheese.
  • Mouth: Snip the fish's mouth with a knife or pair of scissors. (see photo).
  • I arranged the fish on a turquoise/blue platter. Ideal for a summer, Hawaiian/tiki/South Pacific, Finding Nemo/Little Mermaid-themed party, etc.!
  • Action!
