WAFFLE-IRON BROWNIES

Waffle-Iron Brownies image

These are brownies that can be baked in a pan conventionally, but they make a terrific option for waffle-iron cookies. I have a Scandinavian-style iron that makes heart-shaped waffles, which are attractive. Dust them with powdered sugar when you serve them. They're great hot, or they can be frozen.

Categories     dessert

Time 1h15m

Yield about 2 dozen hearts or 2-1/2 dozen squares

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter
2 tablespoons milk
2 ounces (2 squares) unsweetened chocolate
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 large eggs
Powdered sugar for serving, if desired

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. If you plan to bake the brownies, and butter a 9-inch square baking pan. Otherwise, preheat a waffle iron. In a small bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda and salt. In a small, heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, butter and milk. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil, stirring until the butter has melted. Remove from the heat. Add the unsweetened chocolate and vanilla. Stir until the chocolate melts and the mixture is smooth. Place into a pan of cold water to cool the mixture to room temperature.
  • With an electric mixer, beat in the eggs. Gradually blend in the flour mixture until smooth.
  • (Spread evenly into the prepared pan if you are baking the brownies. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the center is just set and feels firm when touched. Cool completely before attempting to cut, these are very rich and gooey! Dust with powdered sugar and cut into squares.)
  • To make brownies in waffle iron: Drop rounded spoonfuls of the brownie mixture into the preheated waffle iron. Close the iron and cook for about 2 minutes until the brownies are done. Remove and cool on a rack. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

WAFFLE IRON HASH BROWNS

Waffle Iron Hash Browns image

I'm beginning to think my waffle iron can do anything. It can make waffles, of course. It can make omelets (try it! Just whip up omelet ingredients and pour them in). It can make panini (whoa?game changer). And it can make quesadillas to beat the band. (Oh, it can also sing "Jingle Bells" like no one's business. That's another story for another time.) But did you know your waffle iron can turn frozen hash browns into the crispiest, butteriest taters you ever did see/hear/taste? It's true. And considering how long both frozen hash browns and waffle irons have been around, I'm amazed it took humankind this long to figure it out. (I'm so glad it did!)

Categories     side-dish

Time 3h25m

Yield six 4- inch waffles

Number Of Ingredients 7

One 30-ounce bag frozen shredded hash browns
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Cooking spray
1/2 cup chopped shaved ham
1 cup freshly grated Cheddar cheese
Ketchup, for serving

Steps:

  • Thaw the hash browns at room temperature for about 3 hours, turning the package over occasionally. (Or you may place the frozen hash browns in the fridge overnight.) When they are thawed, preheat the waffle iron to medium-low heat.
  • Place half the hash browns in the middle of a stack of three or four paper towels. Bunch up the potatoes and squeeze them to force out as much liquid as possible. Place the hash browns in a large bowl, then repeat with the rest of the hash browns.
  • Drizzle in the butter, then add the pepper and toss everything together.
  • Coat the surface of the waffle iron with cooking spray, then add 1/2 cup of the potato mixture to each well. (You should hear them start to sizzle!)
  • Sprinkle the chopped ham evenly over the potatoes then add the cheese. Sprinkle about 1/4 cup of the potatoes over the top of each waffle. Then close the lid and let 'em cook! How long the waffles take to cook depends on the heat of your waffle maker and the moisture of the potatoes. Lift the lid and check on the waffles from time to time to make sure they aren't burning. The edges and the cheese will start to crisp up and get golden, but you'll want to keep it going until everything is deep golden.
  • Use a dull knife or spatula to remove the waffles. Serve them with ketchup and dig right in! These are absolutely addictive. Crispy and wonderful!
  • Change Things Up!
  • For a simpler hash brown, omit the cheese and ham and just put 3/4 cup
  • potatoes in each well.
  • Add diced onion and green bell pepper along with the ham and cheese.

WAFFLED BROWNIE SUNDAE

Waffled Brownie Sundae image

Cooking the batter on a waffle iron cuts your brownie-baking time in half, and eliminates cooling time altogether. Pile ice cream and toppings onto these cakey brownies hot off the press for an instant sundae.

Time 45m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

3/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
Fine salt
4 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for brushing waffle iron
1/2 cup sugar
2 large eggs, beaten
Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce, sprinkles and maraschino cherries, for topping
Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce, sprinkles and maraschino cherries, for topping

Steps:

  • Preheat a waffle iron to medium-high. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F (to keep cooked waffles warm). Sift together the flour, cocoa powder and 1/8 teaspoon salt in a small bowl; set aside.
  • Combine half the chocolate and the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring until melted and smooth, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly. Stir in the sugar and eggs. Add the flour mixture and remaining chocolate and stir until just combined.
  • Lightly brush the top and bottom of the waffle iron with butter. Fill the waffle iron about three-quarters of the way full (some waffle iron should still be showing). Close the lid gently and cook until the waffles are cooked through and slightly crispy around the edges, 4 to 6 minutes. Keep the cooked waffles warm in a 200 degrees F oven or covered with foil on a plate while you make the remaining waffles.
  • Top each waffle with ice cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce, sprinkles and a cherry, if desired.

WAFFLE IRON (EASY!) TRIPLE CHOCOLATE BROWNIES !

WAFFLE IRON (Easy!) Triple Chocolate Brownies ! image

This is an old recipe... and much loved by all of the family! I posted this as a request from a Just A Pinch friend.. enjoy! *** Children love to watch these being made... so be careful not to let them get burned on the waffle iron! *** This is not my photo, and it doesn't show how they look dipped in melted chocolate.

BROWNIE BATTER
1 box brownie mix (prepare as dirrected on box)
(or use your favorite batter)
1/2 c chocolate chips, mini
optional: add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts !
COATING
1 lb dark chocolate bark (melted in double boiler)
1 jar(s) optional: chocolate (or multi colored sprinkles)
PREPARATION OF WAFFLE IRON:
1 can(s) cooking spray (spay waffle iron as needed)

Steps:

  • 1. Prepare your favorite brownie batter or use a box mix. Add the mini chocolate chips and stir them in evenly.
  • 2. Spray and then heat waffle iron.
  • 3. Put about a tablespoon of batter into each section of your waffle iron. Close the lid and bake 3-6 minutes (or until cooked and not burnt!) Remove from waffle iron and let cool.
  • 4. Melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler. Dip each waffle brownie into the chocolate. Place on a wax paper lined baking sheet to cool and let the chocolate solidify.
  • 5. *** Chocolate tends to burn easier than other waffle iron recipes, so you may need to adjust heat and time accordingly. *** While the melted chocolate is still wet and melted... you can sprinkle with chocolate or colored sprinkles. *** Another topping instead of melted chocolate is: 1 cup powdered sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder Mix together well and sift onto the warm brownie waffles.
