Turmeric Banana Almond Milk image

I came up with this milk as a way to get more Turmeric in my diet. It is cool and refreshing. I was inspired by a banana raita dish that a friend from India served me years ago.

1 1/2 cups almond milk
1 banana
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon agave syrup (or to taste)
1 pinch curry powder
1 dash black pepper (a few grinds with a grinder)
3 -4 ice cubes

Steps:

  • Place all in a blender and blend.

Banana Golden Milk image

This is a different take on golden milk that ups the 'help-you-sleep factor' by adding in a banana (which naturally contains Tryptophan). You can serve this at room temp, warm it up, refrigerate, or even freeze it for an anytime, any- season drink.

1 ½ cups unsweetened almond milk
1 medium very ripe banana
½ cup unsweetened coconut milk
1 ½ teaspoons maple syrup
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch ground turmeric, or to taste
1 pinch ground cinnamon, or to taste
1 pinch ground ginger, or to taste

Steps:

  • Combine almond milk, banana, coconut milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger in a blender; blend until completely smooth.
  • Pour mixture into a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, just until milk is warm. Do not bring to a simmer, or milk will curdle. Serve immediately.

I frantically started searching for recipes when my husband brought home 1 kilo of fresh turmeric root. I found many drink recipes calling for milk, turmeric, and ginger root. I sampled different amounts of each ingredient and feel this is a perfect balance between creamy almond milk, spicy ginger, and the earthy taste of turmeric. This is a less spiced version of Haldi Ka Doodh.

1 (1 1/2 inch) piece fresh turmeric root, peeled and grated
1 (1/2 inch) piece fresh ginger root, peeled and grated
1 tablespoon honey
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 pinch ground turmeric
1 pinch ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Combine turmeric root, ginger root, and honey together in a bowl, crushing the turmeric and ginger as much as possible.
  • Heat almond milk in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Once small bubbles begin to form around the edges, reduce heat to low. Transfer about 2 tablespoon milk to turmeric mixture to allow mixture to soften and honey to melt into a paste-like mixture.
  • Mix the turmeric paste into milk in the saucepan; raise temperature to medium-low and cook, stirring continuously, until fully combined. Blend with an immersion blender for a smooth texture.
  • Pour turmeric tea into a mug and top with ground turmeric and cinnamon.

  • Add banana, coconut milk, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, and nutmeg to a high-speed blender and blend on high until creamy and smooth. If including, add cardamom, clove, and fresh carrot juice at this time (optional).
  • If too thick, thin with more coconut milk or water. If too thin, thicken with ice (or more frozen banana, though it will add more sweetness).
  • Taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding more cinnamon for warmth, black pepper for spice, ginger for "zing," turmeric for earthiness / more intense color, or banana for sweetness. Adding carrot juice will also add sweetness and more intense orange/yellow hue.
  • Divide between serving glasses (ours are from West Elm) and enjoy immediately. Keep leftovers in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Freeze leftovers by pouring into an ice cube tray and use for future smoothies (either this smoothie or others you'd like to infuse with a golden milk flavor).
